The Chicago Cubs and the Pittsburgh Pirates face off in the series finale of their four game NL Central division set from PNC Park on Thursday.
The Chicago Cubs will look to salvage a series split after stealing game three by a final score of 1-0 on Wednesday. The lone run of the ball game came from Alex Avila’s RBI triple, while Jon Jay and Javier Baez added base hits of their own as the Cubs racked up just three hits as a team in the win. Jose Quintana threw six innings of six hit, shutout baseball, striking out six and not factoring in the decision. Pedro Strop got the win to even his record up at 4-4 this season while Wade Davis struck out a pair in the perfect 9th inning for his 29th save of the campaign. Jon Lester will start the opener and is 9-6 with a 4.46 ERA and 159 strikeouts this season. In his career, Lester is 4-5 with a 3.39 ERA and 59 strikeouts against Pittsburgh.

The Pittsburgh Pirates will look to win the set even after dropping game three on Wednesday. Andrew McCutchen, David Freese, Jose Osuna, Sean Rodriguez, Chris Stewart and starting pitcher Gerrit Cole each logged a base hit, as the Buccos outhit the Cubs 6-3, with none of Pittsburgh’s hits going for extra bases. Cole was spectacular, throwing eight innings of two hit, shutout baseball while walking four and striking out eight, not factoring in the decision. Daniel Hudson gave up the game-deciding RBI triple in the 9th, taking the loss to fall to 2-6 this season. Jameson Taillon will start the finale and is 7-5 with a 4.50 ERA and 107 strikeouts this season. In his career, Taillon is 2-2 with a 3.68 ERA and 19 strikeouts against the Cubs.
Chicago is 23-5 in Lester’s last 28 starts against a team with a losing record and 2-5 in their last 7 road games while the over is 4-1 in Lester’s last 5 starts overall. Pittsburgh is 4-1 in their last 5 games overall and 8-3 in their last 11 home games against a left-handed starter while the over is 4-1 in Taillon’s last 5 home starts. Chicago is 0-4 in Lester’s last 4 starts against Pittsburgh.
It’s not like the Cubs have been thoroughly outplaying Pittsburgh this series, as a matter of fact it’s been quite the opposite. Pittsburgh was going blow for blow with the Cubs on Wednesday, and barely missed out on going for the sweep here. Lester has allowed 11 runs in his last two starts, going just 6.2 innings, while Taillon has allowed just one run in his own last eleven innings of work. It should also be noted that Lester’s last two starts have each seen a combined 23 runs or more so the over may be worth a look, but as for a side, I think the Pirates and the plus money at home is the way to go on Thursday.
