The Oakland Athletics welcome the division rival Houston Astros to town in AL West MLB on Friday.
The Houston Astros have hit a few snags over the past month or so but the team has been looking formidable of late. The Astros have rolled to seven consecutive victories after downing the Seattle Mariners 5-3 on Wednesday. The Stros were solid on the mound and clutch at the dish late. Houston starter Lance McCullers Jr. was charged with all three runs on four hits and a base on balls through 5.1 innings while four relievers tossed scoreless baseball. The Astros totaled nine hits and walked three times with Cameron Maybin clubbing a two run bomb in the 9th while Marwin Gonzalez went 2-4 with a pair of RBI’s and a run. Collin McHugh has been named by the Houston Astros as Friday’s starter at the Oakland Athletics. McHugh did not receive a decision in a 5-1 win versus the Texas Rangers where he was charged with the lone run on four hits and two BB in 4.2 frames.

The Oakland Athletics had an outside chance at a winning record a few weeks ago but a long slump has ended that goal. The Athletics had dropped nine straight before knocking off the Los Angeles Angels 3-1 on Wednesday. A’s starter Sean Manaea upped his record to 10-9 with five hits and three bases on balls allowed over six scoreless innings. The Oakland offense did their damage on seven hits and a pair of walks with Khris Davis going 3-3 with a homer and two RBI’s while Chad Pinder drove in a run and scored. Right hander Jharel Cotton toes the rubber in the series opener versus the visiting Houston Astros on Friday night. Cotton looks to bounce back from a 7-6 loss at the Seattle Mariners last time out with four runs plated on seven hits including three homers in four frames.
Houston are 7-1 in their last 8 Friday games and the under is 9-3-1 in Houston last 13 road games while the over is 7-3 in Houston last 10 Friday games. Oakland are 1-8 in their last 9 overall and Oakland are 1-8 in their last 9 games on grass while Oakland are 2-7 in their last 9 games following a win. Houston are 10-1 in the last 11 meetings in Oakland and Houston are 35-16 in the last 51 meetings.
Cotton has looked good at times so he is capable of winning this but I’d take a shot with the hotter team if I were betting this…
