The Houston Astros and Oakland Athletics faceoff in game one of their DH in a Saturday MLB matchup.
The Houston Astros built a huge lead in the American League West thanks to a extremely hot start which has been enough to carry the team throughout the year with the Rangers and Angels forced to play catch up from day one. The Astros are on the verge of wrapping up the division and a few injuries are beginning to heal which is a key to success once the postseason gets close. The Stros aren’t a top tier team from a pitching perspective with a team ERA just over four but that hasn’t been a problem with the top ranked offense in the game averaging over 5 ½ runs per game on a .284 team batting average. Houston has a rare combination of speed and power which makes this team a nightmare for opposing pitchers. Right hander Charlie Morton gets Saturday’s game one start from the Houston Astros for his second outing against the Oakland Athletics in 2017. Morton comes off of a 12-8 win versus the Mets where he allowed a pair of runs on six hits while striking out nine in five frames.

The Oakland Athletics were a playoff team a few years ago but have struggled since with a few bad trades hurting the team during their postseason run. Things have slowly gotten worse for the Athletics who have been pesky at times but at the end of the day the team is a distant last place in the American League West. The A’s might have to dip in to the free agent market to make immediate improvements for 2018 but I’m guessing that there won’t be enough ‘impact’ players brought in to make the team significantly better. Oakland needs help offensively with a .244 team batting average producing 4.43 runs. The Athletics do hit homers but Khris Davis and his 39 long balls is the reason the power numbers are solid. The A’s team ERA of 4.80 is 24th and that doesn’t work with scoring numbers as they are. The Oakland Athletics are recalled Daniel Mengden from the minors to make the start in game one of the doubleheader versus the Houston Astros on Saturday. In 2017 Mengden has gone 1-1 with a 10.12 ERA and a 2.00 WHIP over eight frames.
The under is 9-3-1 in Houston last 13 road games and the under is 12-5-2 in Houston last 19 Saturday games while Houston are 37-17 in their last 54 road games. Oakland are 1-8 in their last 9 overall and Oakland are 1-8 in their last 9 games on grass while the over is 5-2-1 in Oakland last 8 Saturday games. Houston are 10-1 in the last 11 meetings in Oakland and Houston are 35-16 in the last 51 meetings.
I see Gossett and Mengden starting for the Athletics in different spots but I don’t think it matters so I’m backing the Astros who want a nice start to the day…
