For the Sunday game, the Tigers will be bringing out RHP Animal Sanchez. In his 77.2 innings and 3-3 record this year, Sanchez has a 7.53 ERA with 68 Ks and 21 BBs.
The Tigers have a few key hitters on their squad. Heading into the weekend, Nick Castellanos brought 135 hits, 65 runs, 21 homers and 84 RBI while Ian Kinsler had 113 hits, 79 runs, 16 homers and 41 RBI. In the Saturday game, Castellanos had two hits and an RBI; Kinsler came up empty.
Over on the Blue Jays’ side, they’re going with LHP JA Happ on Sunday. In his 119.1 innings and 7-10 record this year, Happ has a 3.85 ERA with 113 Ks and 41 BBs.
Toronto has some big bats as well. Justin Smoak came into the weekend on 139 hits, 78 runs, 37 homers and 85 RBI while Kevin Pillar had 132 hits, 62 runs, 14 homers and 38 RBI. Pillar ripped a homer with four hits and two RBI on Saturday; Smoak went 0-for-4.
The Tigers are 5-14 in Sanchez’s last 19 road starts and 1-4 in their last five Sunday games. Detroit is also 1-6 in Sanchez’s last seven Sunday starts and 6-21 in Sanchez’s last 27 starts with four days’ rest.
Meanwhile, the Blue Jays are 2-8 in their last 10 Sunday games and 1-5 in the last six during game three of a series. Toronto is also 2-5 in Happ’s last seven home starts and 11-4 in Happ’s last 15 starts in game three of a series and 14-6 in Happ’s last 20 starts versus a team with a losing record.
Sanchez has had a bit of a rough time lately, and it’s resulted in 18 earned over his last 11.1 innings. As for Happ, he had a couple of bad starts last month but has bounced back with two earned on 10 hits in his last 11.2 innings over two starts. I like Happ to keep it going here so I’m taking the Blue Jays for the win.
