We have a potential preview of the NL Wild Card matchup going down at Chase Field on Monday, as the Arizona Diamondbacks host the Colorado Rockies to kick off a four game NL West division set.
The Colorado Rockies will look to keep building momentum after completing a four game sweep of the Dodgers after Sunday’s 8-1 win in the series finale gave Colorado their sixth win in their last seven games. Mark Reynolds led the team with a grand slam, while Nolan Arenado went 2 for 4 with a solo homer and two RBIs and Trevor Story hit a solo shot of his own. Tony Wolters added an RBI as well while Carlos Gonzalez went 2 for 4 with a pair of doubles. DJ LeMahieu and Raimel Tapia each contributed a pair of base hits to the winning cause for Colorado. Tyler Chatwood got the win, improving to 7-12 this season after tossing five innings of five hit, shutout baseball, walking a pair and striking out five in the win. Kyle Freeland will start the opener and is 11-10 with a 3.99 ERA and 102 strikeouts this season. In his career, Freeland is 1-1 with a 3.60 ERA and 6 strikeouts against Arizona.

The Arizona Diamondbacks will look to build after salvaging a win and avoiding being swept by the Padres after a 3-2 win in Sunday’s finale gave the D-Backs their 16th win in their last 19 games. All of Arizona’s damage on the scoreboard was done via the long ball, with J.D. Martinez hitting a pair of solo home runs while Paul Goldschmidt added a solo shot of his own to account for the three runs in the win. David Peralta, Brandon Drury and starting pitcher Robbie Ray added base knocks of their own in the winning effort. Speaking of Ray, he got the win to improve to 13-5 this season after giving up both runs on four hits while walking a pair and striking out 12 over six innings of work. Archie Bradley struck out the side in the 9th for his 1st save of the season. Zack Greinke will start game one and is 16-6 with a 3.01 ERA and 194 strikeouts this season. In his career, Greinke is 9-5 with a 4.00 ERA and 142 strikeouts against Colorado.
Colorado is 1-4 in Freeland’s last 5 starts and 6-1 in their last 7 games overall while the under is 9-2 in Freeland’s last 11 division starts. Arizona is 16-3 in their last 18 games overall and 9-0 in their last 9 games against a team with a winning record while the over is 6-0 in their last 6 home games. Colorado is 0-5 in the last 5 meetings between these two teams.
Both of these teams come into this one in pretty good form, so I think the pick in this one lies in the pitching matchup. Freeland may lead the Rockies’ in wins and ERA, but he hasn’t gotten the win in any of his last 6 starts and the Rockies have lost four of his last 5 starts as a team. Greinke has posted back-to-back one run outings against the Dodgers and has allowed four combined runs in his last three starts spanning 19.2 innings. Plus, the D-Backs have won seven of Greinke’s last nine starts and are in better form long-term, so I think that Arizona is the pick here, and to negate the heavy juice, I’ll take Arizona on the run line.
