The New York Mets and the Chicago Cubs face off in the finale of their three game set from Wrigley Field on Thursday.
The New York Mets will look to salvage a win that would avoid the sweep and snap a three game losing streak following their 17-5 loss in game two on Wednesday. Dominic Smith led the Mets with two RBIs, going 1 for 2 with a homer, while Jose Reyes belted out a solo shot and starting pitcher Matt Harvey chipped in an RBI of his own in the loss. Amed Rosario went 2 for 4 at the dish while Travis Taijeron went 2 for 3, and Nori Aoki along with Asdrubal Cabrera, chipped in base hits of their own in the loss. Speaking of Harvey, he took the loss, falling to 5-5 this season after giving up five runs on seven hits while walking four and whiffing a pair over just 3.1 innings of work. Seth Lugo will start the finale and is 6-4 with a 4.64 ERA and 67 strikeouts this season. This will be Lugo’s first career start against the Cubs.

The Chicago Cubs will look to complete the sweep of the Mets after demolishing New York in game two on Wednesday. Albert Almora Jr. stole the show, going 2 for 2 with a home run, a triple and a whopping six RBIs. Willson Contreras went 2 for 3 with three RBIs, while Anthony Rizzo and Ian Happ each added two RBIs a piece, with both going 0-fer at the dish in the win. Rene Rivera went 2 for 2 with a pair of doubles and two RBIs in the win, while Javier Baez hit a solo homer, going 4 for 5 at the plate. Jon Jay added an RBI to round out the scoring for Chicago, while Kris Bryant went 3 for 5 with a double and Ben Zobrist along with Jason Heyward contributed base hits of their own in the win. Jon Lester got the win to improve to 11-7 this season after allowing a pair of runs on six hits while walking four and striking out five over six innings of work. Mike Montgomery will start the finale and is 5-8 with a 3.64 ERA and 88 strikeouts this season. In his career, Montgomery is 0-0 with a 3.60 ERA and 4 strikeouts against the Mets.
New York is 1-11 in their last 12 games against a left-handed starter and 1-5 in Lugo’s last 6 starts against a team with a winning record while the over is 8-2 in their last 10 road games. Chicago is 4-1 in Montgomery’s last 5 starts against a team with a losing record and 9-3 in their last 12 games against a team with a losing record while the over is 5-2 in Montgomery’s last 7 starts overall. New York is 3-10 in the last 13 meetings between these two teams in Chicago.
Montgomery still isn’t the easiest for me to trust, but he’s been getting the job done as of late, while Lugo and the Mets just look ready for this season to end and don’t even have the will to play spoiler at this point. The Cubs feel the heat in the division and will look to turn it on down the stretch and I think they do that here, winning easily and completing the sweep.
