Over at Yankee Stadium on Thursday, the Baltimore Orioles and the New York Yankees will be kicking off their weekend MLB series.
The Orioles are coming off a set against the Blue Jays. Baltimore lost the first two games of that series, then on Wednesday avoided the sweep with a 2-1 win.
USA TODAY Sports
For the Thursday game, the Orioles will be bringing out LHP Wade Miley. In his 148.2 innings and 8-12 record this year, Miley has a 4.96 ERA with 132 Ks.
Baltimore has a few notable bats this year. Jonathan Schoop entered Wednesday with 167 hits, 86 runs, 31 homers and 103 RBI while Adam Jones had 158 hits, 77 runs, 26 homers and 69 RBI. School and Jones combined for four hits, an RBI and a run on Wednesday.
Over on the Yankees’ side, they’re fresh off a series versus the Rays. New York and Tampa split the first two games, then in the Wednesday finale the Yankees took the set with a nail-biter 3-2 victory.
On Thursday New York will be going with RHP Masahiro Tanaka. Over his 158.2 innings and 11-11 record this season, Tanaka has a 4.82 ERA with 165 Ks.
New York has some noteworthy bats this year as well. Brett Gardner entered Wednesday on 139 hits, 88 runs, 20 homers and 56 RBI while Didi Gregorius posted 138 hits, 63 runs, 21 homers and 73 RBI. Gardner put up two hits and two RBI on Wednesday; Gregorius whiffed 0-for-5.
The Orioles are 3-7 in their last 10 Thursday games and 2-4 in their last six versus the AL East. Baltimore is also 0-4 in their last four during game one of a series and 1-6 in their last seven overall.
Meanwhile, the Yankees are 7-2 in their last nine versus a team with a losing record and 5-2 in their last seven versus the AL East. New York is also 49-21 in the last 70 home games following a road trip of seven or more days and 7-3 in their last 10 overall.
Miley posted a loss to Cleveland in his last appearance, giving up four runs in 5.2 innings on six hits. As for Tanaka, he got beat up for seven runs in 4.0 innings against the Rangers during his last start. All things considered, I think Tanaka has a good chance at bouncing back here, as long as the Yankees can find some offense.
