The Boston Red Sox make the long trip to south Florida to battle the Tampa Bay Rays in Friday MLB.
The Boston Red Sox can’t put away the NY Yankees in the American League East so wins are crucial every day. The Red Sox have won two of three following a 6-2 win versus the visiting Oakland Athletics on Thursday afternoon. Both the pitching and offense contributed with Boston starter Drew Pomeranz upping his record to 16-5 with a run plated on five hits and a trio of bases on balls over six innings of work. The Red Sox did their damage on eight hits and a walk with Christian Vasquez going solo while Andrew Benintendi was 3-4 with three RBI’s and a run followed by Xander Bogaerts with a run and RBI. The Boston Red Sox have named left hander Chris Sale as Friday’s starter at the division rival Tampa Bay Rays. Sale faced Tampa Bay last time out and came away with a 9-0 victory with six hits allowed while recording eight strikeouts in six frames.

The Tampa Bay Rays are still holding out hope that a Wild Card is still within grasp but time is not their friend. The Rays have dropped five of seven after a 3-2 defeat to the visiting New York Yankees on Wednesday. The bats were silent and a few early runs by the Yanks turned out to be the difference with TB starter Chris Archer allowing three third inning runs before his outing ended after four innings. Five relievers tossed scoreless baseball but Tampa Bay couldn’t respond at the plate with nine hits and three BB producing a sol bomb from Kevin Kermaier and an RBI single off the bat of Adeiny Hechavarria that plated Evan Longoria. The Tampa Bay Rays will open their series with the visiting Boston Red Sox Friday with Matt Andriese on the mound. Andriese comes in off of a 9-0 loss to these same Red Sox with eight runs (six earned) scoring on seven hits and two BB over 1.2 innings.
Boston are 11-3 in their last 14 Friday games and Boston are 16-5 in their last 21 games on astroturf while Boston are 17-7 in Sale’s last 24 starts. The under is 7-2 in Tampa Bay last 9 Friday games and Tampa Bay are 2-6 in their last 8 Friday games while the under is 16-7 in Tampa Bay last 23 on astroturf.
The Red Sox have to be watching the scoreboard with Yankees right in their shadow and I think this is a game the team needs badly and gets to kick off their road trip…
