The Pittsburgh Pirates and the Cincinnati Reds square off in game two of their three game NL Central division set on Saturday.
The Pittsburgh Pirates will look to bounce back and even up the series after dropping the opener by a final score of 4-2 in game one on Friday. Adam Frazier went 1 for 4 with an RBI triple, while Jordan Luplow added a sac fly RBI to round out the scoring for the Pirates in the loss. Elias Diaz added a double, while David Freese went 2 for 4 at the dish. Andrew McCutchen, Josh Bell and starting pitcher Chad Kuhl chipped in base hits of their own in the losing effort. Speaking of Kuhl, he gave up all four runs on eight hits while walking three and striking out six over 4.2 innings of work. Ivan Nova will start game two and is 11-13 with a 4.25 ERA and 121 strikeouts this season. In his career, Nova is 3-5 with a 4.68 ERA and 42 strikeouts against Cincinnati.

The Cincinnati Reds will look to take game two and go for the sweep on Sunday after opening the series with a win on Friday. All of Cincinnati’s damage on the scoreboard was done via the solo home run, with Zack Cozart hitting a pair of solo shots while Joey Votto and Scott Schebler each went yard. Tucker Barnhart went 2 for 3 while Adam Duvall and Jose Peraza contributed base hits of their own in the win. Homer Bailey got the win to improve to 5-8 this season, giving up one run on five hits while walking a pair and striking out seven over 5.2 innings of work. Raisel Iglesias notched three strikeouts over 1.2 innings of relief for his 27th save of the season. Sal Romano will start game two for Cincy and is 4-6 with a 4.54 ERA and 57 strikeouts this season. In his career, Romano is 0-2 with a 3.86 ERA and 5 strikeouts against Pittsburgh.
Pittsburgh is 1-10 in Nova’s last 11 road starts and 7-21 in their last 28 road games while the under is 6-1 in their last 7 games overall. Cincinnati is 4-1 in Romano’s last 5 starts and 5-0 in their last 5 home games while the under is 9-3-1 in their last 13 games overall. Pittsburgh is 0-4 in Nova’s last 4 starts against Cincinnati.
At one point this season, I had considered Nova the best pitcher in the Pirates’ rotation, but oh how the mighty have fallen. Nova’s won just one of his last nine starts, giving up four runs or more in six of those nine starts. Cincinnati has been out of it for a while now, but have been playing well in the spoiler role while Romano has allowed three runs or less in each of his last five starts. I’ll take Cincinnati here as more of a fade from Nova.
