The Chicago White Sox and the Detroit Tigers meet in the finale of their four game AL Central division set on Sunday.
The Chicago White Sox will look to win the series after taking a 2-1 series lead with a 10-4 win in game three gave the Sox their sixth win in their last eight games. Nicky Delmonico, Jose Abreu and Yoan Moncada each had two RBIs, with Delmonico going 2 for 5 with a home run. Matt Davidson added a solo shot while Alen Hanson added a double and an RBI and Yolmer Sanchez added an RBI of his own in the win. Tim Anderson went 4 for 5 with a double, while Omar Narvaez went 2 for 5 with a two-bagger of his own and Avisail Garcia went 2 for 4 at the dish. Adam Engel chipped in a base hit of his own in the winning effort. Reynaldo Lopez got the win, improving to 2-3 after giving up all four runs on seven hits over seven innings of work. The Detroit Tigers will look to salvage a series split with the White Sox after dropping game three on Saturday. James McCann fell a homer short of the cycle, going 3 for 4 with a triple, a double and two RBIs. Mikie Mahtook added a triple and an RBI of his own, while Tyler Collins chipped in an RBI despite going 0 for 3 at the dish. Ian Kinsler, Alex Presley and Nick Castellanos each logged a double while John Hicks and Jeimer Candelario each chipped in a base hit in the loss. Myles Jaye took the loss, falling to 1-2 this season after giving up six runs, five earned, on five hits over just 1.2 innings of work. Matt Boyd will start the finale and is 5-10 with a 5.75 ERA and 94 strikeouts this season. In his career, Boyd is 0-4 with a 6.13 ERA and 33 strikeouts against the White Sox.
Chicago is 1-5 in Covey’s last 6 starts and 4-9 in their last 13 division matchups while the under is 13-5-2 in their last 20 games against a left-handed starter. Detroit is 0-7 in Boyd’s last 7 starts and 1-9 in their last 10 home games against a right-handed starter while the over is 20-8 in their last 28 home games. Detroit is 0-5 in Boyd’s last 5 starts against Chicago.
My first thought was to take the over, considering that Covey hasn’t performed that well this season and Boyd hasn’t been too sharp either. But the fact of the matter is that Detroit has had zero success with Boyd on the mound as of late, and have had zero success with Boyd on the bump against the White Sox. Not to mention the White Sox have thoroughly outplayed the Tigers for the majority of this series, so I’ll take a stab with the team in much better form at plus money, and that’s the Chicago White Sox.
