The Oakland A’s and the Philadelphia Phillies face off in the finale of their three game interleague set on Sunday afternoon.
The Oakland A’s will look to bounce back and take the set after dropping game two by a final score of 5-3 on Saturday. Jed Lowrie and Matt Olson each hit a solo homer while Boog Powell added a base hit of his own, despite going hitless in the losing effort. Matt Chapman added a double as Oakland mustered up just three hits as a team in the loss on Saturday. Kendall Graveman left after two scoreless innings of work, while Simon Castro took the loss to fall to 1-3 this season. Sean Manaea will start the finale for the A’s and is 10-10 with a 4.65 ERA and 130 strikeouts this season. This will be Manaea’s first career start against the Phillies, however in his career, Manaea owns a 1-3 interleague record with a 3.89 ERA and 23 strikeouts covering six career starts.

The Philadelphia Phillies will look to build on Saturday’s victory that evened the set up at one win apiece heading into Sunday’s finale. Jorge Alfaro went 2 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs, while J.P Crawford went 1 for 2 with a pair of RBIs of his own. Cesar Hernandez accounted for the other Phillies’ run, while Ty Kelly added a pinch-hit double. Freddy Galvis, Odubel Herrera and Tommy Joseph each pitched in a base hit in the win for the Phils. Ben Lively gave up a pair of runs on two hits while whiffing a pair over three innings of work, not factoring in the decision. Victor Arano got the win to improve to 1-0 this season, while Hector Neris notched his 21st save of the year. Henderson Alvarez will start the finale and will be making his debut for the Phillies here. In his career, Alvarez is 0-2 with a 3.78 ERA and 8 strikeouts against Oakland.
Oakland is 8-20 in their last 28 interleague games and 1-6 in Manaea’s last 7 road starts while the over is 9-3 in Manaea’s last 12 starts overall. Philadelphia is 6-0 in their last 6 games against a left-handed starter and 2-6 in their last 8 interleague home games while the under is 35-14-5 in their last 54 games against the AL West. The under is 12-1 in the last 13 meetings between these two teams.
Alvarez hasn’t pitched since 2015 and even so, in his last three starts he gave up 14 earned in just over 15 innings of work. Manaea was lit up for seven runs in his last starts and the over has been a common thread in his last few starts, so I’ll take the over to cash in once again as I don’t know what to expect from either hurler in this one.
