The San Diego Padres and the Los Angeles Dodgers meet on Monday to kick off a three game set from Dodger Stadium.
The San Diego Padres will look for some consistency over the last week of the season after alternating wins and losses in each of their last six games, including an 8-4 loss in their series finale against the Rockies on Sunday, settling for a series split with Colorado. All of San Diego’s damage on the scoreboard was done via the long ball, with Christian Villanueva going 1 for 4 with a two run home run, while Wil Myers and Yangervis Solarte each went 2 for 4 with a solo homer while Myers also added a double in the loss. Cory Spangenberg went 2 for 3 with a double and Carlos Asuaje added a two-bagger of his own as the Padres put up eight hits as a team in the losing effort, with six of them going for extra bases. Luis Perdomo gave up four runs on six hits while walking a pair and striking out four over five innings of work, taking the loss to fall to 8-11 this season. Travis Wood will start the opener and is 4-6 with a 6.55 ERA and 63 strikeouts this season. In his career, Wood is 5-2 with a 4.23 ERA and 26 strikeouts against the Dodgers.

The Los Angeles Dodgers will look for win #100 of the season when they take on the Padres in the opener, after Sunday’s 3-1 win over the Giants in their series finale on Sunday gave L.A. the series win and three victories in their last four games. Yasmani Grandal accounted for all three Dodger runs in the win, opening the scoring with a sac fly RBI and adding a two run home run in the bottom of the 4th. Cody Bellinger and Logan Forsythe each logged a double while Curtis Granderson, Chase Utley, Joc Pederson and starting pitcher Clayton Kershaw each added base hits of their own in the win. Kershaw went eight strong, giving up just one run on eight hits while striking out six to improve to 18-4 with the victory, while Brandon Morrow notched his 2nd save of the season, striking out a pair in a perfect 9th inning. Yu Darvish will start the opener for L.A. and is 9-12 with a 3.96 ERA and 200 strikeouts this season. In his career, Darvish is 1-1 with a 5.29 ERA and 19 strikeouts against San Diego.
San Diego is 0-4 in Wood’s last 4 road starts and 2-6 in their last 8 Monday games while the under is 6-2 in their last 8 games overall. Los Angeles is 1-4 in Darvish’s last 5 starts and 4-12 in their last 16 division matchups while the over is 4-1 in their last 5 Monday games. San Diego is 19-41 in the last 60 meetings between these two teams in Los Angeles.
Even though Wood bounced back with two earned in six innings against Arizona in his last start, that doesn’t change the fact that he has allowed a combined 17 earned runs in his last 10.1 innings spanning his last three starts. Los Angeles is starting to remember what it feels like to win games and I think they’ll want to carry that over into October, resulting in an opening victory by a couple of runs on Monday.
