The Minnesota Twins and the Cleveland Indians start their final week of the season by kicking off a three game AL Central division set from Progressive Field on Tuesday.
The Minnesota Twins come into this one with a wild-card berth in sight after pulling off the four game sweep of the Detroit Tigers, following back-to-back 10-4 victories, including the win in Sunday’s finale. Eduardo Escobar led the charge, going 1 for 5 with a home run and three RBIs. Joe Mauer added two RBIs, while Jorge Polanco went 2 for 4 with a solo home run and a double. Brian Dozier and Eddie Rosario added a double and an RBI while Zack Granite added an RBI of his own in the win. Kennys Vargas added a double of his own, going 2 for 4 while Jason Castro added a base knock of his own in the win. Jose Berrios got the win to improve to 13-8 this season after giving up two runs on five hits while walking a pair and striking out six over five innings of work. Bartolo Colon will start the opener and is 6-14 with a 6.63 ERA and 84 strikeouts this season. In his career, Colon is 7-5 with a 3.90 ERA and 53 strikeouts against Cleveland.

The Cleveland Indians will look to keep their momentum going into the playoffs after winning 29 of their last 31 games including a 4-2 win over the Mariners in their series finale on Sunday. Jason Kipnis led the way going 2 for 3 with a double and two RBIs, while Edwin Encarnacion went 2 for 4 with a pair of double and an RBI and Jose Ramirez added a solo homer to round out the scoring for the Tribe in the win. Abraham Almonte, Jay Bruce and Francisco Lindor all contributed base hits in the winning effort for Cleveland. Corey Kluber got the win to improve to 18-4 this season after giving up a pair of unearned runs on six hits while walking a pair and striking out ten over seven innings of work. Bryan Shaw and Cody Allen closed out the last two innings in perfect fashion, with each striking out a pair in their respective inning, ending with Allen notching his 29th save of the year. Josh Tomlin will start game one and is 9-9 with a 4.98 ERA and 100 strikeouts this season. In his career, Tomlin is 5-6 with a 5.21 ERA and 48 strikeouts against Minnesota
Minnesota is 0-4 in Colon’s last 4 starts and 4-0 in their last 4 division matchups while the over is 4-0-1 in their last 5 road games. Cleveland is 4-0 in Tomlin’s last 4 home starts and 41-10 in their last 51 games overall while the under is 5-1 in their last 6 division games. Cleveland is 5-2 in Tomlin’s last 7 starts against Minnesota.
I think it’s a tale of two sides here, as Colon has personally lost his last four starts, giving up 16 earned in 11 innings over his last three outings. Meanwhile, Cleveland has won Tomlin’s last four starts and seven of his last eight, and given the form of the Indians over the last month, I think Cleveland on the run line is a slam dunk here even though the Twins are the team with something to play for.
