The Cincinnati Reds and the Milwaukee Brewers kick off their final week of the season by facing off in the opener of a three game NL Central division set from Miller Park on Tuesday.
The Cincinnati Reds will look to build some confidence down the stretch after dropping their last six games, including a 5-4 loss in their series finale against the Red Sox, resulting in being swept for the second consecutive series. Billy Hamilton put up a triple and an RBI while Scooter Gennett went 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI of his own in the loss. Zack Cozart and Joey Votto each went 2 for 4 at the dish while Adam Duvall and starting pitcher Jackson Stephens each went 1 for 2 at the dish in the losing effort. Speaking of Stephens, he gave up one run on two hits while walking a pair and whiffing three over six innings of work. Raisel Iglesias gave up two runs in the eighth inning, which decided the game, resulting in his 2nd blown save of the season and falling to 3-3 with the loss. Deck Mcguire will start the opener and is making his first career start after four relief appearances over the last two weeks.

The Milwaukee Brewers will need some help to make the postseason over the final week after dropping four of their last five games, including a 5-0 loss to the Cubs in their series finale on Sunday. Hernan Perez, Ryan Braun and Keon Broxton each logged a base hit as the Brew Crew put up just three hits in the loss for Milwaukee. Chase Anderson took the loss, falling to 11-4 this season after giving up three runs on seven hits while striking out eight over 6.1 innings of work. Zach Davies will start game one and is 17-9 with a 3.84 ERA and 124 strikeouts this season. In his career, Davies is 2-3 with a 3.45 ERA and 34 strikeouts against Cincinnati.
Cincinnati is 0-6 in their last 6 games overall and 20-43 in their last 63 road games while the under is 6-2-1 in their last 9 road games against a right-handed starter. Milwaukee is 7-1 in Davies’ last 8 home starts against a team with a losing record and 1-4 in their last 5 games overall while the under is 22-8-2 in their last 32 home games. Cincinnati is 1-5 in the last 6 meetings between these two teams in Milwaukee.
Like most bettors, I’m not much of a fan of betting on guys making their major league debuts this late in the season, and this is a prime example of why. The Reds are already struggling as it is, and Mcguire is expected to hold down a Milwaukee team that will have all hands on deck to make a final playoff push over the last week. No thanks. Davies has been one of the better arms in the Brewers’ rotation, and I think he will lead Milwaukee to a big win in game one on Tuesday.
