The Washington Nationals and the Philadelphia Phillies square off in the rubber match of their three game NL East division set on Wednesday.
The Washington Nationals will try to bounce back and win the series after having their three game winning streak snapped with a 4-1 loss in game two on Tuesday. Howie Kendrick’s solo home run was the lone run the Nats would put on the board, while Anthony Rendon added a double and Trea Turner along with Matt Wieters, each chipped in a base hit as Washington logged just four base hits as a team in the loss. Gio Gonzalez took the loss to fall to 15-8 this season after giving up three runs on five hits while walking five and striking out seven over five innings of work. Tanner Roark will start the finale and is 13-10 with a 4.41 ERA and 161 strikeouts this season. In his career, Roark is 6-5 with a 3.54 ERA and 70 strikeouts against Philadelphia.

The Philadelphia Phillies will look to win the series for some bragging rights heading into their final series of the season after Tuesday’s win in game two. Cameron Rupp led the way, going 1 for 3 with a double and two RBIs, while Tommy Joseph and Rhys Hoskins each added an RBI in the winning effort for the Phils. Aaron Altherr, Freddy Galvis and Nick Williams each added a base hit in the winning effort as the Phillies put up just six hits as a team in the victory. Jake Thompson got the win to improve to 3-2 this season after giving up just one run on four hits while walking a pair and striking out five over five innings of work. Hector Neris struck out the side in the 9th for his 25th save of the season. Mark Leiter will start the finale and is 3-6 with a 4.69 ERA and 79 strikeouts this season. In his career, Leiter is 1-0 with a 4.50 ERA and 9 strikeouts against Washington.
Washington is 4-1 in Roark’s last 5 division starts and 8-3 in their last 11 road games while the under is 20-7-3 in their last 30 games against a right-handed starter. Philadelphia is 1-4 in Leiter’s last 5 starts and 30-67 in their last 97 games against a right-handed starter while the under is 4-0-1 in their last 5 games overall. Washington is 6-2 in Roark’s last 8 starts against Philadelphia.
Roark hasn’t allowed more than three earned in his last nine starts, including a win over these same Phillies just a couple of weeks ago. Leiter will probably be able to stay with the big club next season, but he’s struggled as of late, and I think the Nats will take the series after having a game to integrate Bryce Harper back into their lineup. I’ll take Washington here, given Roark’s success against the Phillies over the last couple of seasons.
