The Houston Astros and the Texas Rangers meet in the finale of their three game AL West division set on Wednesday afternoon.
The Houston Astros will look to complete the sweep after winning the first two games of the series by a combined score of 25-5, including a 14-3 rout of the Rangers in game two on Tuesday. Brian Mccann and Cameron Maybin each logged a home run and three RBIs, while it was Maybin who also chipped in a triple. Carlos Correa went 3 for 5 with a pair of doubles and three RBIs, while Alex Bregman added two RBIs along with a run from George Springer and Marwin Gonzalez. Evan Gattis and Yuli Gurriel each had a pair of hits with a double, while Tyler White and Tony Kemp each contributed base hits in the winning effort. Dallas Keuchel got the win to improve to 14-5 this season after giving up two runs, one earned, on five hits while striking out eight over six innings of work. Justin Verlander will start the finale and is 14-8 with a 3.38 ERA and 208 strikeouts this season. In his career, Verlander is 10-6 with a 3.02 ERA and 116 strikeouts against Texas.
USA TODAY Sports
The Texas Rangers will look to salvage a win and avoid the sweep for the sake of pride here after being blown out in the first two games of the set. Delino DeShields and Drew Robinson each hit a solo homer, while Elvis Andrus went 2 for 3 with an RBI of his own in the loss. Will Middlebrooks and Robinson Chirinos also chipped in base hits of their own, as the Rangers were outhit 18-7 in the losing effort on Tuesday. Cole Hamels took the loss, falling to 11-5 this season after giving up six runs on six hits while walking four and striking out three over three innings of work. Nick Martinez will start the finale and is 3-7 with a 5.42 ERA and 65 strikeouts this season. In his career, Martinez is 3-3 with a 3.28 ERA and 29 strikeouts against Houston.
Houston is 4-0 in Verlander’s last 4 starts and 9-2 in their last 11 games overall while the under is 6-1 in their last 7 games against a right-handed starter. Houston is 0-6 in Martinez’s last 6 starts and 0-4 in their last 4 division matchups while the under is 4-1 in their last 5 games overall. The under is 6-1 in Martinez’s last 7 starts against Houston.
This might be one of the easiest picks I’ve made all season in all honesty. Houston has destroyed the Rangers in the first two games of the set, and now get to put Justin Verlander on the mound. The same Verlander who is 6-0 in his last 7 starts, and has given up one run or less in five straight starts and six of his last seven starts. Verlander has also tossed two shutouts over his last three starts and has allowed just two runs over 28 innings in an Astros uniform. The Astros on the run line seems like a lock to me on Wednesday.
