The Oakland A’s and the Texas Rangers face off in game three of their four game AL West division set on Saturday.
The Oakland A’s will look to bounce back after dropping game two by a final score of 5-3 on Friday. Renato Nunez led the charge by going 1 for 4 with a home run, a three run shot which was the first homer of his career. Matt Chapman and Jed Lowrie each doubled, while Khris Davis, Ryon Healy, Mark Canha and Jake Smolinski all chipped in base hits in the loss for the A’s. Raul Alcantara gave up four runs on five hits while walking and striking out a pair each, taking the loss to fall to 1-2 this season. Daniel Gossett will start game three and is 4-10 with a 5.82 ERA and 72 strikeouts this season. This will be Gossett’s first career start against Texas.

The Texas Rangers will look to win game two and go for the sweep on Sunday after winning the opener on Friday. Shin-Soo Choo went 1 for 2 with two RBIs, while Nomar Mazara added a pair of RBIs of his own in the win. Willie Calhoun went 3 for 4 with an RBI to round out the scoring for Texas, while Elvis Andrus chipped in a double. Joey Gallo and Drew Robinson each contributed a base hit each in the winning effort for the Rangers. Martin Perez got the win to improve to 13-12 this season after giving up all three runs on five hits while walking and striking out a pair each over six innings of work. Alex Claudio struck out a pair in the scoreless 9th, racking up his 11th save of the year. Andrew Cashner will start game two and is 10-11 with a 3.42 ERA and 84 strikeouts this season. In his career, Cashner is 0-0 with a 4.38 ERA and 5 strikeouts against Oakland.
Oakland is 1-6 in Gossett’s last 7 division starts and 5-1 in their last 6 road games while the under is 5-2 in Gossett’s last 7 division starts. Texas is 0-5 in Cashner’s last 5 home starts and 1-7 in their last 8 home games while the over is 5-1-1 in Cashner’s last 7 starts overall. Oakland is 7-1 in the last 8 meetings between these two teams.
This series is hard to gauge with it being strictly for pride at this point, however Gossett has allowed a combined 13 earned runs over his last two starts spanning nine innings of work. And while Cashner isn’t a world-beater by any means, I think he can do enough to keep the Oakland bats quiet and help Texas get the job done on Saturday.
