The Milwaukee Brewers and the St. Louis Cardinals square off from Busch Stadium on Sunday to close out their 2017 MLB regular season.
The Milwaukee Brewers will look to end the season on a high note after officially being eliminated from playoff contention after a 7-6 loss on Saturday. Domingo Santana went 3 for 5 with a home run and two RBIs, while Travis Shaw added two RBIs of his own. Ryan Braun added a pair of doubles and an RBI while Orlando Arcis went 3 for 4 with an RBI of his own to round out the scoring for the Brew Crew in the loss. Neil Walker, Brett Phillips and Andrew Susac each chipped in base hits of their own in the losing effort for Milwaukee. Junior Guerra gave up three runs on two hits while walking a pair and striking out five over 2.1 innings of work, not factoring in the decision. Anthony Swarzak took the loss, falling to 6-4 this season with the defeat. Zach Davies will start the finale and is 17-9 with a 3.90 ERA and 124 strikeouts this season. In his career, Davies is 2-0 with a 3.41 ERA and 34 strikeouts against St. Louis.

The St. Louis Cardinals will look to finish the season strong after winning game two on Saturday. Paul DeJong and Jose Martinez each logged a double and two RBIs, while Stephen Piscotty added two RBIs of his own and Harrison Bader chipped in a run in the winning cause on Saturday. Greg Garcia went 2 for 4 while Aledmys Diaz and Carson Kelly each contributed a base hit in the winning effort for the Cards. Luke Weaver gave up all six runs on nine hits while walking and striking out four apiece, not factoring in the decision. Ryan Sherriff got the win to improve to 2-1 while Juan Nicasio notched his 6th save of the season. Carlos Martinez will start the finale and is 12-11 with a 3.64 ERA and 217 strikeouts this season. In his career, Martinez is 5-4 with a 2.18 ERA and 91 strikeouts against Milwaukee.
Milwaukee is 8-3 in their last 11 road games and 11-5 in Davies’ last 16 road starts while the under is 47-19-3 in their last 69 games overall. St. Louis is 4-1 in Martinez’s last 5 starts and 2-6 in their last 8 games overall while the over is 5-1 in Martinez’s last 6 division starts. Milwaukee is 4-0 in Davies’ last 4 starts against St. Louis.
With Saturday’s loss eliminating the Brewers, you have to wonder if their heads will actually be in the game on Sunday. A loss like that that ends your season so close to the end can be debilitating, and facing a team’s ace who has had a career ERA just over two against you isn’t a recipe for success. I’ll take the Cardinals to finish the season with a win on Sunday.
