USA TODAY Sports
For the Sunday game, the A’s will be bringing out RHP Daniel Mengden. In his 36.0 innings and 2-2 record this year, Mengden has a 3.75 ERA with 21 Ks and eight BBs.
Oakland has some interesting hitters this year. Jed Lowrie entered the weekend with 156 hits, 85 runs, 14 homers and 67 RBI while Ryon Healy had 155 hits, 66 runs, 25 homers and 78 RBI in that time. On Saturday, Healy put up an 0-for-4 line; Lowrie had one run.
Over on the Rangers’ side, they’re going with LHP Cole Hamels on Sunday. In his 145.0 innings and 4.10 ERA this year, Hamels has a 4.10 ERA with 100 Ks and 52 BBs.
Texas has a few notable bats as well. Elvis Andrus entered the weekend on 189 hits, 100 runs, 20 homers and 87 RBI while Shin-Soo Choo had 142 hits, 96 runs, 22 homers and 78 RBI. On Saturday, Andrus managed one hit and an RBI. Choo didn’t play.
The A’s are 10-1 in their last 11 Sunday games and 3-7 in their last 10 during game four of a series. Oakland is also 4-1 in Mengden’s last five starts and 1-8 in Mengden’s last nine starts versus the AL West.
Meanhilw, the Rangers are 2-7 in their last nine Sunday games and 26-7 in Hamels’ last 33 home starts. Texas is also 31-12 in Hamels’ last 43 starts with four days’ rest and 48-20 in Hamels’ last 68 starts.
Mengden had a good run of three straight quality starts going, then gave up four earned on five hits in 6.0 innings versus the Mariners his last time out. As for Hamels, he had three straight quality starts broken up in his last outing as well, surrendering six earned on six hits in 3.0 innings agains the Astros. This should be a pretty good pitching matchup, but Hamels and the Rangers probably have the higher ceiling here. I’ll take Texas.
