The Boston Red Sox and the Houston Astros square off in game one of the ALDS from Minute Maid Park on Thursday afternoon.
The Boston Red Sox come into this one as the AL East champions after finishing the regular season with a 93-69 record, including a 45-36 record away from Fenway Park this season. Mookie Betts was one of four Red Sox with 20 or more home runs this season, leading the way with 24 homers, while he was the only Boston player to rack up more than 100 RBIs this season. Hanley Ramirez, Mitch Moreland and Andrew Benintendi logged 23, 22 and 20 homers respectively, while Betts also led the team with 46 doubles. Xander Bogaerts led the BoSox with 6 triples and a .273 batting average this season. Chris Sale became the team’s ace in his first season with Boston, notching a 17-8 record, a 2.90 ERA and a whopping 308 strikeouts this season, good enough to reward him with the start in game one of the ALDS. In his career, Sale is 5-1 with a 1.31 ERA and 65 strikeouts against Houston.
USA TODAY Sports
The Houston Astros walk into game one of the ALDS as the winners of the AL West with a 101-61 record, including a 48-33 at home this season. George Springer led the team with 34 homers along with 85 RBIs. Jose Altuve batted a team-best .346 average with 24 homers and shared the team lead with 67 extra base hits. Josh Reddick added 82 RBIs and a .314 average while Alex Bregman chipped in a team-high 5 triples and Yuli Gurriel put up a team-leading 43 doubles this season. Justin Verlander leads a three-headed monster of he, Dallas Keuchel and Brad Peacock into the first 3 games of the ALDS. Verlander will look to start things off with a win after finishing the regular season with a 15-8 record with a 3.36 ERA and 219 strikeouts this season, including a 5-0 mark with a 1.06 ERA since being raded to Houston in his career, Verlander is 5-5 with a 2.88 ERA and 98 strikeouts against Boston.
Boston is 7-2 in Sale's last 9 starts and 19-7 in their last 26 road games while the under is 9-4-1 in their last 14 road playoff games. Houston is 5-0 in Verlander's last 5 starts and 11-2 in their last 13 home games while the under is 4-1 in Verlander's last 5 starts overall. The over is 9-4 in the last 13 meetings between these two teams.
My initial lean went to Boston as you have Sale with solid numbers against Houston and over 300 strikeouts this season at plus money. However, that was with the assumption that Keuchel was starting game one, but with Verlander getting the nod in the opener, I can't see myself picking a side, but what I do see is a pitchers duel brewing, so I'll take the under here.
