It’s an all NL West edition of the NLDS on Friday, as the wild card winning Arizona Diamondbacks take on the Los Angeles Dodgers in game one from Dodger Stadium.
The Arizona Diamondbacks come into this one fresh off of their 11-8 victory over the Colorado Rockies in the wild card game. Paul Goldschmidt and Daniel Descalso each logged a home run, with Goldy going 2 for 5 with three RBIs and Descalso adding two runs. The D-Backs combined for four triples, including Ketel Marte who hit a pair of three baggers, while A.J. Pollock went 2 for 5 with a double and his triple, and Archie Bradley added a two run triple in his lone at-bat. Jeff Mathis added an RBI of his own, while Jake Lamb went 4 for 5 at the dish and David Peralta chipped in a 3 for 5 effort at the plate in the win. The Los Angeles Dodgers enter the postseason with the NL West crown and the best record and baseball, finishing 104-58, including a sparkling 57-24 record at home. Rookie sensation Cody Bellinger is expected to lead the charge for the Dodgers, after leading the team with 39 homers and 97 RBIs in the regular season. Chris Taylor led the team with 34 doubles, 5 triples and a total of 60 extra base hits, while Justin Turner batted a team-best .322 from the dish this season. Clayton Kershaw is expected to lead the charge for the Dodgers’ rotation, with guys like Alex Wood, Rich Hill and Yu Darvish alongside Kershaw to try to lead the Dodgers to their first World Series since 1988. Kershaw is expected to start the opener after going 18-4 with a 2.31 ERA and 202 strikeouts in the regular season. In his career, Kershaw is 14-8 with a 2.55 ERA and 187 strikeouts against Arizona.
Arizona is 0-5 in their last 5 road playoff games and 25-11 in their last 36 games overall while the over is 5-2 in their last 7 games following a win. Los Angeles is 0-9 in their last 9 home games against a team with a winning record and 6-1 in their last 7 division matchups while the over is 7-3 in their last 10 home games. Arizona is 6-0 in the last 6 meetings between these two teams.
As good as Kershaw is, he’s been known to be a different pitcher in the playoffs, and not in a good way, with a career 4-7 mark in the postseason. The D-Backs have also had a lot of the success as of late between the two teams. But 95-99% of the time, betting against Kershaw is a good way to lose your money, and that's the case here as Kershaw has ended up with the win in his last 4 starts against Arizona. As tempting as the plus money is, I have to go with the Dodgers here.
