The Washington Nationals and the Chicago Cubs square off in game four of the NLDS from Wrigley Field on Wednesday.
The Washington Nationals will look to even up the series and avoid elimination after falling down 2-1 in the series after a 2-1 loss in game three on Monday. Ryan Zimmerman went 1 for 4 with an RBI double, accounting for the lone run in the losing effort. Jayson Werth and Michael Taylor each contributed a base hit as the Nats logged just three hits as a team in defeat. Max Scherzer went 6.1 innings, giving up just one run on one hit, while walking three and striking out seven, not factoring in the decision. Sammy Solis logged his first blown save of the season, while Brandon Kintzler took the loss. Stephen Strasburg will start game four after taking the loss in the series opener, giving up a pair of unearned runs over seven innings of work while striking out ten. In his career, Strasburg is 1-1 with a 2.08 ERA and 41 strikeouts against the Cubs.

The Chicago Cubs will look to close out the series with a win on Wednesday after going up 2-1 in the series. Anthony Rizzo and Albert Almora Jr. accounted for both Cubs’ runs in the win, while Ben Zobrist added a double and Jason Heyward chipped in a base hit of his own, as the Cubbies logged just four hits as a team in the victory. Jose Quintana went 5.2 innings, giving up just an unearned run on two hits while striking out seven, not factoring in the decision. Carl Edwards Jr. got the win to improve to 1-1, while Wade Davis put up his 2nd save of the postseason. Jake Arrieta will start game four, and was 14-10 with a 3.53 ERA and 163 strikeouts in the regular season. In his career, Arrieta is 1-2 with a 5.49 ERA and 48 strikeouts against Washington.
Washington is 14-5 in their last 19 Tuesday games and 36-17 in their last 53 road games against a team with a winning home record while the under is 18-6-2 in their last 26 road games against a right-handed starter. Chicago is 13-5 in Arrieta’s last 18 starts against the NL East and 16-5 in their last 21 games overall while the undr is 4-1 in their last 5 playoff home games.
I can’t help but get the feeling that the Nationals are running out of gas here. They couldn’t muster up enough offense to make use of a strong start from Scherzer in game three, and I’m not sure much will change in game four. Arrieta has had success in the postseason, and while as good of a pitcher as Strasburg is, with a postseason ERA under one, he is still 0-2, including the loss in game one. I think the Cubs have enough in the tank to figure out Strasburg one more time and close out the series with a win here.
