The New York Yankees and Cleveland Indians meet Wednesday in game five of the ALDS at Progressive Field.
The New York Yankees can become one of those rare teams to comeback from being done 0-2, and they hope to make their first ALCS since 2012. The Yankees pitching staff has finally shown up in these playoffs, as they’ve allowed a combined three runs in their last two games and are fresh off a game four win in which they struck out 14 batters. Offensively, Gary Sanchez and Aaron Hicks have combined for 12 hits and eight RBI while Starlin Castro has five hits and one RBI. The New York Yankees are 20-2 in their last 22 games when allowing three or less runs, so pitching is the key with this team. CC Sabathia gets the ball, and he was 14-5 with a 3.69 ERA and 120 strikeouts this season. Sabathia is 9-5 with a 4.47 ERA and 106 strikeouts in his postseason career.

The Cleveland Indians have one more chance to advance to their second straight ALCS. The Indians offense went from being red hot to struggling to even make contact in the last two games. The good news for the Indians is that they’ve produced four or more runs in 15 of their last 22 home games. Overall, Jason Kipnis and Jay Bruce have combined for eight hits and five RBI while Carlos Santana has four hits and four RBI. The Indians pitching staff also needs to get under control, allowing 16 runs in the last three games, but a lot of their second half success started with the bats. The Cleveland Indians haven’t lost three straight games since July 30-August 1. Corey Kluber gets the ball, and he was 18-4 with a 2.25 ERA and 265 strikeouts this season. Kluber is 4-1 with a 3.16 ERA and 39 strikeouts in his postseason career.
The Yankees are 1-4 in their last 5 road games, 7-2 in their last 9 vs. American League Central and 4-1 in Sabathias last 5 starts. The Indians are 8-2 in their last 10 games following an off day, 53-26 in Klubers last 79 home starts and 37-14 in Klubers last 51 starts. The Yankees are 1-4 in Sabathias last 5 starts vs. Indians, the Indians are 6-0 in Klubers last 6 starts vs. Yankees and the over is 10-4-2 in the last 16 meetings in Cleveland.
The Indians obviously should be the favorites, as Kluber should be the AL Cy Young, and he has an ERA of 1.81 and an allowed batting average of .179 at home this season. However, in one game where it's win or go home, pressue gets the best of guys, and we've already seen Kluber get rocked by these Yankees once. Sabathia has allowed three or less earned runs in each of his last five games and actually had a better ERA on the road than at home this season. I also love the Yankees bullpen and think they have the edge to beat any team as long as they can snag a lead before the fifth inning. And based on how New York is swinging the bats right now, that's a serious possiblity. Overall, I'm taking a talented Yankees team and the big plus money rather than laying a heavy price with a cold Indians squad and an ace that was rocked in his last game. It may pay off, it may not, but the value is with the hot Yanks right now.
