We close out opening day in the MLB with a rematch of the 2017 NL Wild Card Game from Chase Field as the Colorado Rockies and the Arizona Diamondbacks open up a three game set.
The Colorado Rockies enter the 2018 season after finishing 87-75 in the regular season, good for 3rd in the NL West but enough for the 2nd wild card in the NL, giving the Rockies their first playoff appearance since 2009. The Rockies retained the key blocks of their lineup from last season with Charlie Blackmon, DJ LeMahieu, Nolan Arenado and Trevor Story all returning. The Rockies’ starting rotation remained in tact as well, with their big roster moves coming to bolster the bullpen as Colorado locked up Wade Davis as their closer for 3 years in addition to signing setup man Bryan Shaw to a 3-year deal of his own. Jon Gray will start on opening day for the Rockies and was 10-4 with a 3.67 ERA and 112 strikeouts last season. In his career, Gray is 2-2 with a 4.75 ERA and 30 strikeouts against Colorado.

The Arizona Diamondbacks come into the 2018 campaign after finishing with a 93-69 record last season, finishing 2nd in the NL West, 11 games behind the Dodgers and finishing with their highest win total since 2011 in addition to the top wild card spot, taking down the Rockies in the wild card game before being swept by the Dodgers in the NLDS. Arizona lost the services of J.D. Martinez to Boston, but still return the likes of Paul Goldschmidt, Jake Lamb, and David Peralta while adding Steven Souza Jr. to the outfield in a trade in the offseason. The D-Backs starting rotation remains in tact, with Zack Greinke and Robbie Ray leading the charge. Ray garnered Cy Young nomination for the first time in his career, with a 12.11 K/9 rate and going through a stretch in late May-early June in which Ray logged 37 innings in 5 starts, striking out 48 with a 0.24 ERA. However it’s Patrick Corbin that will start on Opening Day for Arizona and finished 14-13 with a 4.03 ERA and 178 strikeouts last season. In his career, Corbin is 7-3 with a 4.76 ERA and 81 strikeouts against Colorado.
Colorado is 3-8 in their last 11 division matchups and 2-7 in their last 9 road games while the under is 5-1 in their last 6 games against a left-handed starter. Arizona is 5-1 in Corbin’s last 6 home starts and 2-5 in their last 7 games overall while the over is 13-6 in their last 19 division matchups. Arizona is 12-3 in Corbin’s last 15 starts against Colorado and 7-1 in Corbin’s last 8 home starts against Colorado.
I know that the Rockies would want revenge for the loss in the wild card game and would love nothing more than to do it on Opening day. However, Colorado isn’t the same team on the road that they are at home, and Arizona has been money when Corbin has been on the mound against Colorado, especially at home. Gotta take Arizona and the low line in this one.
