The Philadelphia Phillies visit SunTrust Park to open the 2018 MLB schedule with the Atlanta Braves.
The Philadelphia Phillies finished last in the National League East at 66-96 in 2017 but only division winner Washington owned a winning record. Philadelphia had sizeable issues at the plate with a team batting average of .250 that produced just 4.26 runs. The Phillies didn’t display much enough power with 174 homers (#26) or speed with 59 stolen bases (#26).

The Philadelphia rotation received a boost with the signing of Jake Arrietta and is hoping a year of experience leads to improvement on a 4.55 team ERA. The Phillies rotation produced only 65 quality starts and that strained a pen that couldn’t get outs at times. Aaron Nola draws the opening day start for Philadelphia after a 2017 that saw him go 12-11 in 27 starts with a 3.54 ERA.
The Atlanta Braves finished third in the NL East at 72-90 and were a non-factor for the majority of 2017 with issues on the mound and at the plate. The Braves hit the ball well enough at .263 but 4.52 runs was on the light side with a mere 165 long balls being near the bottom of the rankings while 77 steals was #18.
The Bravos team ERA of 4.72 was #24 but the rotation was top ten in quality starts with 77 which says some late runs were allowed by the bullpen. Atlanta opens 2018 with right hander Julio Teheran on the bump after going 11-13 with a 4.49 ERA over 32 starts a season ago.
Philadelphia are 2-7 in their last 9 Thursday games and Philadelphia are 28-63 in their last 91 road games and over is 13-6-1 in Nola’s last 20 road starts. Under is 9-1-1 in Teheran’s last 11 home starts and under is 15-5-1 in Teheran’s last 21 on grass and under is 15-5-1 in Teheran’s last 21 starts overall. Atlanta are 8-3 in Teheran’s last 11 starts vs. Philadelphia.
Nola is the staff ace and should give Philadelphia a solid performance with a promising young lineup behind him. Teheran has done well against Philadelphia overall but struggled at home and I think that’s his downfall here…
