Minnesota did have problems on the mound with a team ERA of 4.59 and WHIP of 1.37 and only 62 quality starts so the arms need further improvement to take the next step. Newcomer Jake Odorizzi comes over from Tampa Bay and has been given the start after going 10-8 with a 4.14 ERA in 28 starts where he served up 30 home runs.
The Baltimore Orioles hit plenty of long balls in 2017 but generally struggled otherwise in 2017. Baltimore hit .260 as a team and averaged 4.59 runs thanks to 232 homers (#5) and virtually no team speed with a mere 32 stolen bases.
The Orioles were hurt in the win column because of struggles on the mound with a team ERA of 4.97 and 1.45 WHIP with both ranked #27. Baltimore only produced 61 quality starts and the starters have to show marked improvement to overcome last season’s 75-87 record. Dylan Bundy draws the O’s opening day start after going 13-9 in 2017 with a 4.24 ERA with 26 homers allowed over 28 starts.
Under is 16-5 in Minnesota last 21 Thursday games and over is 6-2-1 in Minnesota last 9 road games. Over is 8-2 in Baltimore last 10 home games and Baltimore are 6-21 in their last 27 overall and Baltimore are 5-16 in their last 21 games on grass. Under is 8-1 in the last 9 meetings in Baltimore and Minnesota are 6-2 in the last 8 meetings.
Bundy was the best Baltimore had to offer in 2017 and Odorizzi was brought in to boost a poor Minnesota staff. The Orioles are a solid home team but I like the odds with the better team…
