The Pittsburgh Pirates open the 2018 MLB season on the road with an interleague bout with the Detroit Tigers.
The Pittsburgh Pirates look to be in a rebuilding mode after trading Andrew McCutchen and Gerrit Cole which will hurt a team that was 4th in the NL Central at 75-87. Pittsburgh was anemic offensively with 4.12 runs scored on a .244 batting average. The Pirates were 29th with 151 home runs and #22 with 67 steals so this was a base by base offense.

The strength of the Pirates was on the mound where a 4.22 team ERA was #13 in the game while 69 quality starts was #14. Pittsburgh has tabbed right hander Ivan Nova as the opening day starter after going 11-14 in 2017 with a 4.14 ERA in 31 starts where he served up 29 homers.
The days of ruling the American League Central have been a thing of the past for the Detroit Tigers who were last in the division at 64-98 a season ago. The once fearsome offense was middle of the pack in runs at 4.54 on a .258 average with 187 homers and 65 steals both ranked at #23.
The Tigers biggest area of concern was on the mound where the team posted a 5.39 ERA and 1.50 WHIP with both ranked #30 in baseball. The Detroit rotation recorded 72 quality starts so much of the worry was the bullpen that could allow runs in bunches. Jordan Zimmermann draws Friday’s start hoping to improve on 2017 that saw him go 8-13 with a 6.08 ERA in 29 starts.
Under is 22-7-1 in Pittsburgh last 30 road games and under is 18-6-2 in Pittsburgh last 26 Friday games and Pittsburgh are 6-2 in their last 8 overall. Over is 23-6-1 in Detroit last 30 home games and Detroit are 6-22 in their last 28 home games and Detroit are 12-39 in their last 51 games on grass. Over is 10-1 in the last 11 meetings.
Pittsburgh could be tough to peg in the early going and Detroit will only go as far as their pitching. I have a hard time getting Zimmermann’s implosion in 2017 out of my head here…
