Coming up from Rogers Centre on Thursday, we’ve got a fun MLB matchup looming on opening day between the New York Yankees and the Toronto Blue Jays.

After surprising everyone during a “rebuilding year” last season where they got just one win away from the World Series, the Yankees won’t be satisfied with anything but a championship in 2018.

Toronto Blue Jays vs. New York Yankees - 3/29/18 MLB Pick, Odds, and Prediction

USA TODAY Sports

New York’s got some big bats entering this season, led by Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton and Gary Sanchez. In Thursday’s matchup they’ll be supporting the Yankees’ Luis Severino, who posted a 14-6 record with a 2.98 ERA in 2017.

Over on the Blue Jays’ side, they’ll be looking to improve on their 76-86 record from last year. Toronto’s top player this season could likely be Kevin Pillar, as he’s coming off a good spring and put up 150 hits last season.

Taking the mound for the Jays on Thursday will be lefty JA Happ, who managed to go 10-11 on the year in 2017 with a 3.53 ERA and 142 Ks in 145.1 innings of work.

The Yankees are 6-2 in their last eight during game one of s aeries and 3-8 in their last 11 road games versus a left-handed starter. New York is also 0-4 in their last four road games and 5-1 in Severino’s last six starts versus the AL East.

Meanwhile, the Blue Jays are 3-8 in their last 11 following an off day and 1-4 in their last five versus a right-handed starter. Toronto is also 4-1 in Happ’s last five starts and 4-12 in Happ’s last 16 starts in game one of a series.

Everybody’s talking about the Yankees bats this year, but if they’re really going to succeed they’ll need quality contributions from the pitching staff as well. It may take New York a little while to gel with their new roster (and new manager), so I don’t think it would be a reach to pick Toronto here.
