The Chicago Cubs and the Miami Marlins square off in game two of their four game set from Marlins Park on Friday night.

The Chicago Cubs will look to keep the momentum going after starting the year on a high note with an 8-4 win over Miami in game one on Thursday. Tommy La Stella led the Cubbies with a pair of RBIs on a pinch-hit double, while Ian Happ opened the 2018 MLB season with a home run on the very first pitch of the year. Kyle Schwarber and Anthony Rizzo each added a solo homer, while Willson Contreras and Jason Heyward each contributed a double and an RBI. Javier Baez also added a run on the board, while Addison Russell and Kris Bryant each had base hits of their own in the win, with Russell chipping in a pair of base knocks. Jon Lester went just 3.1 innings, giving up four runs, three earned, on seven hits while walking three and striking out a pair. Steve Cishek closed out the 5th, earning the first victory of the season for Chicago in the win. Kyle Hendricks will start game two for the Cubs and was 7-5 with a 3.03 ERA and 123 strikeouts last season. In his career, Hendricks is 2-1 with a 1.32 ERA and 23 strikeouts against Miami.

The Miami Marlins will look to bounce back and even up the series at one after dropping the season opener on Thursday. Brett Anderson led the Fish by going 2 for 3 with a pair of RBIs, while Justin Bour and Garrett Cooper each contributed an RBI to round out the scoring for the Marlins in the loss. Derek Dietrich went 2 for 4 with a triple while Cameron Maybin and Miguel Rojas each had a double, with Maybin’s being one of the pinch-hit variety. Starlin Castro also added a base hit of his own in his first regular season game for his new club after being traded from the Yankees as part of the Giancarlo Stanton deal in the offseason. Jose Arena took the loss after being dinged for 5 runs on 6 hits while walking four and striking out a pair en route to the loss. Caleb Smith will get the start in game two for the Fish and was 0-1 with a 7.71 ERA and 18 strikeouts in 9 appearances (2 starts) for the Yankees last season. This will be Smith’s first career start against the Cubs.

Chicago is 10-3 in their last 13 games against the NL East and 13-6 in Hendricks’ last 19 road starts while the under is 16-6 in Hendricks’ last 22 starts against the NL East. Miami is 6-2 in their last 8 home games and 13-6 in their last 19 Friday games while the over is 7-0 in their last 7 games against the NL Central. Chicago is 8-3 in the last 10 meetings between these two teams.

Miami impressed me a little bit in the opener despite losing the game as they looked like they were getting to Lester early when I wondered where the offense would come from. The problem is that the Cubs have one of the best offensive units in the National League and got to a decent pitcher like Urena who is probably Miami’s ace. The plus money at home with the Marlins is tempting, but I shudder to think what the Cubs will do to Smith, a pitcher who gave up 16 earned runs in 18.2 innings last season and has never gone four innings in his career. Add in Hendricks on the other side and his success in his career against Miami, and I think you have to take the Cubs by a couple of runs.
