We have some AL East division action on Friday as the Boston Red Sox and the Tampa Bay Rays meet in game two of their four game opening weekend set.
The Boston Red Sox will be looking to bounce back and even up the series after letting their season opener get away in a 6-4 loss to the Rays on Thursday. Eduardo Nunez led Boston by going 2 for 4 with a home run, a double and two RBIs, while Rafael Devers added a double and a pair of RBIs of his own to round out the scoring for the BoSox in the loss. Xander Bogaerts went 3 for 4 with a pair of doubles of his own, while Mookie Betts and Christian Vazquez each contributed a base hit in the losing effort for Boston. Chris Sale threw six innings of one hit shutout baseball, walking 3 and striking out nine, not factoring in the decision. Joe Kelly gave up four runs in just 0.1 innings, while Carson Smith gave up the final two in a 6-run 8th inning for Tampa Bay, en route to his first loss and first blown save of the year. David Price will start game two and was 6-3 with a 3.38 ERA and 76 strikeouts over 16 appearances (11 starts) last season. In his career, Price is 3-3 with a 3.91 ERA and 59 strikeouts against Tampa Bay.

The Tampa Bay Rays will look to continue their strong start to the year after taking their season opener on Thursday. Denard Span led the Rays with 3 RBIs along with a triple, while Matt Duffy added a double and an RBI and Brad Miller along with Adeiny Hechavarria added the last two RBIs for Tampa Bay in their big 6-run 8th inning to round out the hitting and scoring for the Rays as they put up just four hits as a team in the win. Chris Archer went 6 innings giving up all four runs on six hits while striking out six, not factoring in the decision. Austin Pruitt got the win to improve to 1-0 while Alex Colome logged his first save of the year. Blake Snell will go to the bump in game two, and was 5-7 with a 4.04 ERA and 119 strikeouts last season. In his career, Snell is 1-3 with a 5.95 ERA and 17 strikeouts against Boston.
Boston is 1-5 in their last 6 games overall and 6-3 in their last 9 road games while the over is 5-0 in Price’s last 5 road starts. Tampa Bay is 8-3 in Snell’s last 11 starts and 5-0 in their last 5 home games while the under is 5-2 in Snell’s last 7 home starts. Boston is 6-3 in the last 9 meetings between these two teams.
A lot of the head-to-head trends would favor Tampa Bay here, but if we’re being honest, I’ve watched a lot of AL East ball, and have never really liked Snell as a starter. Boston just imploded in the opener, and are a much better team than they showed for one inning in the loss. Plus, everyone knows Price’s history with the Rays and you always love a chance to get back at your former team, and I think he does just that with a series-tying win in game two on Friday.
