We have some AL East action on Friday evening, as the New York Yankees take on the Toronto Blue Jays in game two of their four game opening weekend set.

The New York Yankees will be looking to continue their strong start to the season after cruising to a 6-1 season opening win over the Blue Jays on Thursday. Giancarlo Stanton paid huge dividends in his first game for his new club, going 3 for 5 at the dish with a pair of home runs, a double and four RBIs, while Brett Gardner added a solo home run and Gary Sanchez chipped in a double and an RBI of his own to finish off the scoring for the Yanks in the win. Aaron Judge and Neil Walker each added doubles of their own while Aaron Hicks went 2 for 4 and Neil Walker contributed a base hit of his own in the win for New York. Luis Severino got the win, throwing 5.2 innings of one hit, shutout baseball, walking three and striking out 7 in the win. Masahiro Tanaka will start game two and was 13-12 with a 4.74 ERA and 194 strikeouts last season. In his career, Tanaka is 9-4 with a 2.95 ERA and 95 strikeouts against Toronto.

The Toronto Blue Jays will be looking to bounce back and even up the series after losing the season opener on Thursday. Kevin Pillar opened the Blue Jays scoring account with a solo home run, but it was only one of Toronto’s two base hits in the entire game, as Curtis Grandson added a single as the only other base knock. J.A. Happ fell to 0-1, taking the loss after allowing three runs, two earned, on four hits while striking out five over 4.2 innings of work. Aaron Sanchez will get the nod in game two and was 1-3 with a 4.25 ERA and 24 strikeouts over just 8 starts last season. In his career, Sanchez is 2-2 with a 2.40 ERA and 21 strikeouts against the Yankees.

New York is 1-4 in their last 5 road games and 5-1 in Tanaka’s last 6 division starts while the under is 5-1 in their last 6 division matchups. Toronto is 1-4 in Sanchez’s last 5 division starts and 3-14 in their last 17 Friday games while the under is 9-4 in Sanchez’s last 13 home starts. New York is 5-1 in Tanaka’s last 6 starts against Toronto.

As a Toronto fan, it kills me to say this, but after watching the opener, I’m hard pressed to find the confidence to back Sanchez here. Sanchez has a clean bill of health for all we know after having lots of blister issues last season, but we saw how potent the Yankees’ bats can be in the season opener. Tanaka has imploded on the mound from time-to-time against Toronto, but the Yankees have owned Toronto when Tanaka’s been on the mound lately, and in his last start against the Jays, Tanaka threw 7 innings of shutout ball with 15 strikeouts. Hard to ignore numbers like that so I’ll begrudgingly back the Yankees to start 2-0 with a win here.
