We have some interleave MLB action on tap Sunday afternoon in game 1 of a doubleheader, as the Pittsburgh Pirates and Detroit Tigers meet in game two of their three game opening weekend set.
The Pittsburgh Pirates will look to win their first series of the season and go for the sweep on Sunday after taking their regular season opener by a final score of 13-10 in 13 innings. Gregory Polanco led the Pirates by going 3 for 5 with a homer, a double and four RBIs, while Josh Bell and Francisco Cervelli each added three RBIs, with Cervelli also adding a double. Corey Dickerson added an RBI of his own while Starling Marte contributed a triple and Adam Frazier pitched in a double. Josh Harrison and Jordy Mercer also contributed base hits of their own in the winning effort for the Buccos. Ivan Nova threw five innings, giving up a pair of runs on six hits while walking three and striking out four, not factoring in the decision. Michael Feliz and Josh Smoker each received a blown save, while Steven Brault threw three innings of relief for his first win of the year. Trevor Williams gets the nod in game two and was 7-9 with a 4.07 ERA and 117 strikeouts last season. In his career, Williams is 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA and 5 strikeouts against Detroit.

The Detroit Tigers will look to bounce back and even up the set after dropping their season opener on Friday. Dixon Machado led Detroit by going 2 for 6 with a pair of doubles and three RBIs, while James McCann and Miguel Cabrera each added a double and two RBIs of their own and Jose Iglesias also chipped in a two-bagger with a run on the board. Leonys Martin and Mike Mahtook each added a double, while Jeimer Candelario and JaCoby Jones each had a base hit in the losing effort for the Tigers. Jordan Zimmermann went six innings, giving up four runs on six hits while striking out eight, not factoring in the decision. Daniel Stumpf received his first blown save, while Alex Wilson took the loss to fall to 0-1 this season. Michael Fulmer will start game two and was 10-12 with a 3.83 ERA and 114 strikeouts last season. This will be Fulmer’s first career start against Pittsburgh.
Pittsburgh is 8-23 in their last 31 road games and 0-4 in Williams’ last 4 road starts while the over is 9-1 in their last 10 games against the AL Central. Detroit is 16-7 in Fulmer’s last 23 home starts and 13-41 in their last 54 games overall while the over is 23-6-1 in their last 30 home games. Pittsburgh is 5-2 in the last 7 meetings between these two teams in Detroit.
Pittsburgh has had the bulk of the recent success when these two meet in Detroit, and Fulmer may have some rust after not pitching since August and wasn’t playing extremely well before his injury. However, Fulmer is one of the best arms that Detroit has to offer and the Pirates haven’t had any success with Williams on the bump on the road, so I’ll take a shot with Detroit to even up the series with a win here.
