We have some AL East division action on Saturday afternoon, as the New York Yankees take on the Toronto Blue Jays in game three of their four game opening weekend set.
The New York Yankees will look to improve on their strong start and push for the sweep on Sunday after improving to 2-0 with a 4-2 win over the Blue Jays on Friday. Brandon Drury and Tyler Wade each logged a pair of RBIs and a double, while Didi Gregorius went 2 for 3 with a triple and a double. Brett Gardner, Neil Walker and Billy McKinney each had a base hit in the win, while it should be noted that the three power bats for the Yanks in Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton and Gary Sanchez each went 0 for 4 in the win. Masahiro Tanaka went six innings, giving up one run on three hits while striking out eight over six innings of work, while Aroldis Chapman notched his first save of the year. CC Sabathia will start game three and was 14-5 with a 3.69 ERA and 120 strikeouts last season. In his career, Sabathia is 17-11 with a 3.63 ERA and 189 strikeouts against Toronto.
USA TODAY Sports
The Toronto Blue Jays will be looking for their first win of the year after falling to 0-2 with the loss on Friday. Randal Grichuk hit his first home run as a Blue Jay, while Yangervis Solarte added a double and an RBI of his own to round out the two runs Toronto had on the board in the loss. Justin Smoak, Steve Pearce and Kevin Pillar added a double each, as all five of Toronto’s base hits went for extra bases. Aaron Sanchez took the loss to fall to 0-1 after giving up four runs on eight hits while walking four and striking out a pair over 5.2 innings of work. Marco Estrada will start game three for the Blue Jays and was 10-9 with a 4.98 ERA and 176 strikeouts last season. In his career, Estrada is 6-3 with a 4.03 ERA and 60 strikeouts against the Yankees.
New York is 14-3 in Sabathia’s last 17 division starts and 1-4 in their last 5 road games while the under is 4-0 in their last 4 division matchups. Toronto is 5-1 in Estrada’s last 6 home starts and 4-1 in their last 5 games against a left-handed starter while the under is 19-8 in their last 27 home games. Toronto is 8-1 in Estrada’s last 9 starts against the Yankees and 4-1 in Estrada’s last 5 home starts against New York.
New York has kept Toronto’s offense under wraps through the first two games of the series, and Sabathia has been dominant against the AL East dating back to last season. However, Estrada has been money against the Yankees over the last couple of seasons, including allowing just one run while striking out 10 over 14 innings in his last two starts against the Yankees. Toronto’s offense is due for a breakout, and I think we see it on Saturday, so I’ll take a shot at the Blue Jays and the plus money here.
