The Pittsburgh Pirates and the Detroit Tigers meet in game two of a doubleheader on Sunday to finally finish their three game opening weekend set after being rained out twice in the first three days.
The Pittsburgh Pirates will be hoping to at the very least be in a position to win the series if not be going for the sweep depending on the result for the Buccos on Sunday afternoon as the first game is slated to go at 1:10 pm. After the first game, Gregory Polanco leads the Pirates with 4 RBIs and the team’s lone home run, along with a double as part of his team-high two extra base hits. Polanco also leads the team with a .600 batting average and is one of three Pirates with three hits after the team’s opening game. Josh Bell and Francisco Cervelli each have three RBIs, while Adam Frazier is 3 for 7 with a double. Chad Kuhl is slated to start the second half of the double-header, and was 8-11 with a 4.35 ERA and 142 strikeouts last season. In his career, Kuhl is 1-0 with a 4.50 ERA and 6 strikeouts against Detroit.

The Detroit Tigers will be hoping to at the very least going for a series win instead of trying to avoid the sweep after losing on opening day by a final score of 13-10. After Detroit’s first game of the year, Dixon Machado leads the Tigers with three RBIs and is one of five Tigers with two hits this season and one of four hitting .333 this season. Machado also leads the team in extra base hits and doubles with a pair of two-baggers, while Miguel Cabrera and James McCann each have two RBIs and JaCoby Jones leads the team with a 1.000 batting average after going 2 for 2 in pinch-hit appearances in the season opener. Francisco Liriano will make the start in game two of the doubleheader, and was 6-7 with a 5.66 ERA and 85 strikeouts last season, splitting time with the Blue Jays and the Astros. In his career, Liriano is 1-1 with a 3.05 ERA and 23 strikeouts against Pittsburgh.
Pittsburgh is 3-13 in Kuhl’s last 16 road starts and 1-7 in their last 8 games against a left-handed starter while the over is 10-1 in their last 11 games against the AL Central. Detroit is 18-37 in their last 55 home games and 92-43 in their last 135 interleague home games while the over is 24-6-1 in their last 31 home games. The over is 8-0 in the last 8 meetings between these two teams in Detroit.
Making a pick here is slightly difficult for me because who knows what we’re going to see after game one. However, Pittsburgh has really struggled against lefties, both overall and with Kuhl on the bump, and Liriano has a history with the Pirates, playing there for three seasons, so you have to think he will want to stick it to his former team, so I’ll take the Tigers in the second half of the doubleheader here.
