We have some AL West division action on Sunday afternoon, as the Los Angeles Angels take on the Oakland A’s in the finale of their four game weekend set.

The Los Angeles Angels will look to finish off their first series victory of the season after back-to-back wins, including an 8-3 win in game three on Saturday. Zack Cozart led the Angels by going 2 of 4 with a triple and a double along with two RBIs, while Mike Trout and Albert Pujols each added a pair of RBIs, with Trout going 3 for 5 with a pair of doubles while Pujols added a two-bagger of his own. Justin Upton added a double and an RBI of his own, while Andrelton Simmons chipped in an RBI to round out the scoring output for the Halos in the win. Rene Rivera went 2 for 4 with a double while Luis Valbuena chipped in a base knock of his own in the winning effort for Los Angeles. Matt Shoemaker gave up all three runs on four hits while walking and striking out four apiece over 5.2 innings of work for his first win of the season. Shohei Ohtani will make his much-anticipated major league pitching debut in the finale, compiling a 42-15 pitching record with a 2.52 ERA and 624 strikeouts over five years for the Nippon Ham Fighters.

The Oakland A’s will look to salvage a series split with the Angels after dropping game three on Saturday. Stephen Piscotty led the A’s with a pair of RBIs, while Matt Chapman went 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI to finish off the scoring for Oakland in the loss. Khris Davis added a pair of doubles and Marcus Semien chipped in a two-bagger of his own, while Jed Lowrie and Bruce Maxwell added a base hit of their own in the losing effort for Oakland. Daniel Mengden took the loss, falling to 0-1 after giving up six runs, five earned, on seven hits while striking out five over 5.2 innings of work. Andrew Triggs will start the finale for the the A’s, and was 5-6 with a 4.27 ERA and 50 strikeouts last season. In his career, Triggs is 2-0 with a 1.06 ERA and 7 strikeouts against the Angels.

Los Angeles is 2-10 in their last 12 games against a right-handed starter and 4-9 in their last 13 road games while the over is 3-1-1 in their last 5 games overall. Oakland is 5-1 in Triggs’ last 6 division starts and 10-3 in their last 13 home games while the over is 5-0 in Triggs’ last 5 starts overall. Los Angeles is 6-2 in the last 8 meetings between these two teams.

There was a lot of hype about Ohtani coming into the season, and I’m personally excited to see what he has to offer on the mound. However, the fact is that he still hasn’t pitched an inning in the regular season, and I wasn’t impressed with a lot of what we saw in spring training. Triggs is a very good option for the A’s, and has been very good against the rest of the division, in addition to a sparkling 1.06 ERA in his career against Los Angeles. It’s a small sample size, but it’s enough to side with the value and the plus money so I’ll take Oakland for a series split here.
