The New York Yankees and Toronto Blue Jays meet Sunday in MLB action at Rogers Centre.
The New York Yankees look for a bounce back win after losing Saturday when allowing two runs in the bottom of the eighth. The Yankees couldn’t get much going in their first loss of the season and Dellin Betances allowed two runs in two innings of work. Offensively, Giancarlo Stanton lead the Yanks with four hits and four RBI while Brandon Drury and Didi Gregorius have combined for six hits and two RBI. The New York Yankees have been held to three or less runs in just five of their last 20 regular season games, so you should expect a bounce back performance in this spot. Sonny Gray gets the ball, and he was 5-4 with a 3.43 ERA and 84 strikeouts last season. Gray is 4-3 with a 2.47 ERA and 41 strikeouts in his career against the Blue Jays.
USA TODAY Sports
The Toronto Blue Jays hope to even things up before the Chicago White Sox come to town. The Blue Jays found a way to steal a victory, as the offense produced five runs, when scoring a combined three runs in their first two games. Of course, watching Pillar steal second, third and home gave the Toronto crowd a much needed boost. Justin Smoak leads the Blue Jays with four hits and two RBI while Kevin Pillar and Randal Grichuk have combined for five hits and two RBI. The Toronto Blue Jays have now won 11 of their last 14 games when scoring more than three runs dating back to last season. Marcus Stroman gets the ball, and he was 13-9 with a 3.09 ERA and 164 strikeouts last season. Stroman is 6-4 with a 3.19 ERA and 52 strikeouts in his career against the Yankees.
The Yankees are 4-1 in their last 5 during game 4 of a series, 3-7 in their last 10 road games and 2-5 in Grays last 7 road starts. The Blue Jays are 2-5 in their last 7 home games, 1-5 in their last 6 vs. American League East and 11-5 in Stromans last 16 starts on astroturf. The Blue Jays are 6-0 in Stromans last 6 home starts vs. Yankees and the Yankees are 4-1 in the last 5 meetings.
We know what the Yankees have to offer and know that Gray is a respectable pitcher who is always worth a look when the price is right. However, Stroman is a big game pitcher who likes the spotlight and usaully shows up when he faces the Yankees. In fact, Stroman has won his last six home starts against the Yankees, and he's allowing a batting average of .224 in 134 at bats against current Yankees hitters. Of course, Stroman also had an ERA of just 2.63 at home last season. I'll gladly back the Blue Jays and the plus money at home.
