We have some AL Central action on tap on Thursday’s MLB schedule as the Detroit Tigers take on the Chicago White Sox in game one of their three game set.
The Detroit Tigers come into this one rested after having their matchup with the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday postponed due to extreme cold. The Tigers will be looking to bounce back after dropping four of their first five games to start the year including a narrow 1-0 loss to the Royals on Tuesday. In that loss, Jeimer Candelario, Victor Martinez and Mike Mahtook each logged a base hit as the Tigers mustered up just three hits as a team. Matt Boyd took the loss giving up the only run on four hits over six innings of work. Jordan Zimmermann will start game one and is 0-0 with a 6.00 ERA and 8 strikeouts this season. In his career, Zimmermann is 5-2 with a 5.08 ERA and 27 strikeouts against the White Sox.
USA TODAY Sports
The Chicago White Sox will look to build some steam after avoiding the sweep and salvaging a win against Toronto with a 4-3 win over the Blue Jays on Wednesday. Jose Abreu and Matt Davidson each logged solo homers while Yoan Moncada and Avisail Garcia each added an RBI to round out the scoring for the White Sox in the win. Yolmer Sanchez went 2 for 4 with a double while Welington Castillo and Adam Engel each added a base knock of their own in the victory as well. Carson Fulmer went five innings, giving up all three runs on five hits while striking out five, not factoring in the decision. Aaron Bummer got his first blown save of the year while Nate Jones picked up the win and Joakim Soria struck out a pair in the 9th for his 2nd save of the year. James Shields will start game one and is 1-0 with a 6.00 ERA this season. In his career, Shields is 9-8 with a 4.43 ERA and 122 strikeouts against Detroit.
Detroit is 4-12 in Zimmermann’s last 16 road starts and 7-19 in their last 26 road games while the under is 5-2 in their last 7 games overall. Chicago is 4-1 in Shields’ last 5 starts and 4-1 in their last 5 home games while the under is 8-3 in Shields’ last 11 home starts against a team with a losing record. Detroit is 2-6 in the last 8 meetings between these two teams in Chicago.
The Tigers haven’t had the most success in Chicago and have gotten off to the slower start between the two teams. However, Detroit had a day off to recoup, while the White Sox narrowly escaped with a win in Toronto and had to travel back to Chicago for this early start. Zimmermann has also had more success against Chicago than Shields has had against Detroit, and while the White Sox have played well with Shields on the bump, Shields is still way too inconsistent for my liking, so I’ll take a shot with Detroit and the plus money here.
