We have some NL East MLB action on Saturday as the Miami Marlins take on the Philadelphia Phillies in game two of their three game weekend series.

The Miami Marlins will look to bounce back after losing 3 straight and 4 of their last 5 games following a 5-0 loss to the Phillies in the series opener on Thursday. Brian Anderson notched a double, while Derek Dietrich, Starlin Castro and Justin Four each chipped in a base knock as the Fish put up just four base hits as a team in the losing effort. Caleb Smith took the loss, falling to 0-1 after giving up three runs on two hits while walking six and striking out four. Dillon Peters will get the nod in game two and is 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA and 2 strikeouts this season. In his career, Peters is 0-0 with a 1.38 ERA and 12 strikeouts against Philadelphia.

The Philadelphia Phillies will look to build some momentum after snapping a 3 game losing streak with their series opening win on Thursday. Maikel Franco fell a double short of the cycle, going 3 for 4 with a homer, a trip and four RBIs. Odubel Herrera added a 2 for 3 night at the dish with an RBI to round out the scoring for the Phils in the win. Cesar Hernandez also chipped in a base hit to round out the offensive output for Philly in the victory. Nick Pivetta got the win after throwing 5.2 innings of four hit shutout baseball, striking out nine for his first win of the year. Vince Velasquez will start game two and is 0-1 with a 13.50 ERA and 4 strikeouts this season. In his career, Velasquez is 2-1 with a 2.84 ERA and 28 strikeouts against Miami.

Miami is 3-14 in their last 17 road games and 6-2 in their last 8 division matchups while the over is 6-0 in their last 6 Saturday games. Philadelphia is 3-10 in Velasquez’s last 13 home starts and 5-1 in their last 6 home games while the over is 9-3 in Velasquez’s last 12 division starts. Miami is 0-5 in the last 5 meetings between these two teams.

Backing the Marlins on the road is always a dicey proposition, as the offense from years’ past is gone and you’re taking a gamble if it’s going to show up or not. However, the Marlins have shown to be capable of putting some runs on the board at times, and Velasquez was lit up in his last start, and while I don’t think both will continue long term, I need to see signs of turning things around from Velasquez before instilling any faith in him, so I’ll take a stab at Miami and the plus money here.
