We have some AL Central action from the diamond as the Detroit Tigers take on the Cleveland Indians in game one of a four game MLB set from Progressive Field on Monday.
The Detroit Tigers will look to keep their momentum going after winning three straight, completing the sweep of the Chicago White Sox thanks to a 1-0 win in the series finale on Sunday. Miguel Cabrera’s first inning sac fly RBI was all the scoring the Tigers would need in the win, as Leonys Martin went 2 for 3 from the dish and accounted for both Detroit hits in the winning effort. Mike Fiers got the victory on the mound, improving to 1-0 this season after tossing six innings of three hit shutout baseball, striking out six en route to the win. The Tigers’ bullpen was near flawless in relief, giving up just a single walk, culminating in Share Greene closing out the 9th for his 2nd save of the season. Francisco Liriano will start game one and is 1-0 with a 1.35 ERA and 3 strikeouts this season. In his career, Liriano is 5-6 with a 4.19 ERA and 97 strikeouts against the Indians.

The Cleveland Indians will be looking to build some momentum of their own after escaping with a 3-1 walk-off win in their series finale against Kansas City on Sunday, giving the Tribe their first series victory of the season. Jose Ramirez added an RBI for the Indians in the 8th to tie the game followed by a two-run home run from Yan Gomes to give the Tribe the W. Michael Brantley, Yonder Alonso and Tyler Naquin each added a base hit of their own as Cleveland put up just four hits in the victory. Mike Clevinger went 7.1 innings, giving up the one run on nine hits while walking a pair and striking out nine, not factoring in the decision. Cody Allen struck out a pair in a scoreless 9th, getting the win to improve to 1-0 this season. Corey Kluber will start game one and is 0-1 with a 2.40 ERA and 14 strikeouts this season. In his career, Kluber is 8-7 with a 3.97 ERA and 139 strikeouts against the Tigers.
Detroit is 8-19 in their last 27 road games and 17-35 in their last 52 division matchups while the under is 14-6 in their last 20 road games. Cleveland is 19-7 in Kluber’s last 26 division starts and 47-16 in their last 63 games overall while the under is 4-1 in their last 5 games overall. Cleveland is 7-2 in Kluber’s last 9 starts against Detroit and 4-1 in his last 5 home starts against the Tigers.
Detroit’s sweep on the road of Detroit is impressive, considering that the White Sox are young and have lots of talent, and we didn’t know if we’d be able to say the same for the Tigers this season after having a fire sale dating back to last year. However, Cleveland is a better team than what they’ve shown so far, and I think the walk-off win on Sunday will spark some momentum for the Tribe heading into this one, considering Detroit hasn’t had much luck against the Indians with Kluber on the bump. I don’t love the line, but laying the juice with the Indians is the only option here in my opinion.
