Down at Marlins Park on Monday, the New York Mets and the Miami Marlins will be kicking off their MLB series.
The Mets are coming off a set against the Nationals. New York won the first two games Thursday and Saturday, then on Sunday, the Mets managed to eke out a 6-5 win in a 12-inning thriller.
USA TODAY Sports
For the Monday game, the Mets will be bringing out RHP Noah Syndergaard on Monday. In his two starts and 10.0 innings pitched this year, Syndergaard has a 5.40 ERA with 17 Ks.
Coming into the week, the Mets’ leading hitter was Asdrubal Cabrera with nine hits, four runs and a pair of RBI. On Sunday, Cabrera ripped a homer and had two RBI.
Over on the Marlins’ side, they’re fresh off a series versus the Phillies. Miami lost the first two 5-0 and 20-1 (!) before Sunday’s game where the Marlins redeemed themselves with a 6-3 win.
Jose Urena will be making the start for the Marlins on Monday. In his pair of starts and 11.0 innings this year, Urena has a 4.91 ERA with nine strikeouts.
Heading out of last week, the Marlins’ top hitter was Starlin Castro with 11 hits, four runs and four RBI, while Derek Dietrich had 10 hits. In Sunday’s game, Castro had a pair of runs and Dietrich had one hit.
The Mets are 3-7 in their last 10 Monday games and 2-6 in Syndergaard’s last eight starts in game one of a series. New York is also 1-4 in Syndergaard’s last five starts versus a team with a losing record and 1-5 in his last six starts versus the NL East.
Meanwhile, the Marlins are 3-10 in the last 13 during game one of a series and 1-4 in Urena’s last five starts during game one of a series. Miami is also 1-5 in Urena’s last six home starts and 0-4 in Urena’s last four starts.
Both these teams are starting out the season at opposite ends of the spectrum, and after the Philly series (especially Saturday) no one is expecting much out of the Marlins. That said, Urena did okay in his last start and may help keep the team hanging around here. That said, I think the potential payoff is probably enticing enough to take a chance on the Marlins in this one.
