We have some NL East division action on Tuesday as the New York Mets and the Miami Marlins square off in game two of their three game set from Marlins Park.
The New York Mets will look to continue their strong start to the year, pushing their winning streak to 6 games and their record to 8-1 overall with a 4-2 series opening win over the Fish in game one on Monday. Amed Rosario went 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI while Adrian Gonzalez and Jay Bruce each contributed RBIs as well in the winning effort for New York. Michael Conforto and Asdrubal Cabrera each chipped in base hits as well in the victory for the Mets. Noah Syndergaard got the win after giving up both runs, one earned, on five hits while walking a pair and striking out five over six innings of work. Jeurys Familia struck out the side in the 9th for his 5th save of the season. Jacob DeGrom will start game two and is 2-0 with a 1.54 ERA and 12 strikeouts this season. In his career, DeGrom is 4-4 with a 3.77 ERA and 90 strikeouts against Miami.

The Miami Marlins need to bounce back after losing 5 of their last 6 games, including their opening game setback to the Mets on Monday. Derek Dietrich and Brian Anderson each recorded an RBI and a double, with Dietrich hitting 3 for 4 at the dish in the loss. Miguel Rojas went 2 for 5 while Starlin Castro, Braxton Lee and Bryan Holiday each contributed base hits of their own in the losing effort. Jose Arena gave up three runs on five hits while striking out four over five innings of work to fall to 0-2 this season. Caleb Smith will start game two and is 0-1 with a 4.32 ERA and 12 strikeouts this season. This will be Smith’s first start against the Mets.
New York is 6-0 in their last 6 games overall and 7-3 in DeGrom’s last 10 road starts while the over is 19-7-1 in their last 27 road games against a left-handed starter. Miami is 2-6 in their last 8 home games and 1-5 in their last 6 games overall while the over is 5-2 in their last 7 division games. New York is 1-4 in the last 5 meetings between these two teams and 0-4 in DeGrom’s last 4 starts against Miami.
I was somewhat tempted to take a look at the plus money with Miami at home given DeGrom’s struggles against Miami. However, the fact is that Smith has only gone more than four innings once in his career. Smith struggled with control against the Phillies, walking six before taking the loss. The Marlins’ bullpen took a hit after Urena was unable to go deep against the Mets in game one, and if Smith has to go deep, this could be a long night for Miami. I think DeGrom’s edge on the mound is more than enough to push the Mets’ winning streak to seven here.
