We have some MLB action on Wednesday afternoon’s slate, as the Tampa Bay Rays take on the Chicago White Sox in the finale of their three game set from Guaranteed Rate Field.
The Tampa Bay Rays will be looking to complete the sweep after winning the first two games of the series, including a 6-5 win in game two on Tuesday. Carlos Gomez went 2 for 5 with a solo homer, while Joey Wendle, Wilson Ramos, Adeiny Hechavarria and Daniel Robertson each added an RBI in the winning effort for the Rays. Mallex Smith went 2 for 4, while C.J. Cron and Matt Duffy each contributed base hits of their own in the win. Blake Snell got the win, evening up his record at 1-1 after giving up just one run on one hit while walking five and striking out ten. Alex Colome closed out the 9th for his 3rd save of the year. Yonny Chirinos will start game three and is 0-0 with a 0.00 ERA and 7 strikeouts this season. This will be Chirinos’ first career start against the White Sox.

The Chicago White Sox will look to salvage a win and avoid the sweep after their loss in game two on Tuesday. Jose Abreu went 2 for 5 with a home run, a double and three RBIs, while Yolmer Sanchez and Adam Engel each chipped in an RBI to round out the scoring for the White Sox in the loss. Tyler Saladino went 2 for 3 with a double while Tim Anderson added a two-bagger of his own and Yan Moncada also chipped in a base hit of his own to finish off the offensive output for Chicago in the loss. Carson Fulmer took the loss, giving up four runs, three earned, on five hits while walking six and striking out four to fall to 0-1 this season. James Shields will start the series finale and is 1-0 with a 5.73 ERA and 1 strikeout this season. In his career, Shields is 3-0 with a 1.35 ERA and 23 strikeouts against Tampa Bay.
Tampa Bay is 2-8 in their last 10 games overall and 2-5 in their last 7 road games while the over is 5-0 in their last 5 road games against a right-handed starter. Chicago is 0-5 in their last 5 games overall and 3-11 in their last 14 games against the AL East while the over is 7-3 in Shields’ last 10 starts against a team with a losing record. The over is 16-5-1 in the last 22 meetings between these two teams in Chicago.
Anyone who has followed me knows I’m quick to fade Shields as I simply haven’t been able to trust him on the mound for a while now. However, it’s more than I can say for Chirinos who is a relative unknown at this point. Chirinos did a good job silencing the solid Red Sox lineup, but Tampa Bay is one of the teams that Shields has had some success against in his career, so I’ll side with the White Sox to salvage a win and get their first victory at home this season.
