We have some NL East division action on tap Wednesday as the Atlanta Braves and the Washington Nationals meet in the finale of their three game MLB set.
The Atlanta Braves will be looking to salvage a win and avoid the sweep at the hands of the Nets following a 4-1 loss in game two on Tuesday. Dansby Swanson accounted for the lone Braves run, going 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI while Ozzie Albies added a pair of two-baggers of his own. Ender Inciarte chipped in a base hit of his own to round out the offense for the Braves in the losing effort. Mike Foltynewicz took the loss, giving up three runs, two earned, on five hits while walking a pair and striking out three over five innings of work. Brandon McCarthy will start the finale and is 2-0 with a 3.97 ERA and 9 strikeouts this season. In his career, McCarthy is 0-2 with a 2.05 ERA and 12 strikeouts against Washington.

The Washington Nationals will be looking to complete the sweep of Atlanta after their win in game two on Tuesday. Ryan Zimmerman led the Nets by going 1 for 4 with a triple and two RBIs, while Brian Goodwin added an RBI of his own in the winning effort. Wilmer Difo went 2 for 4 with a double and Anthony Rendon added a two-bagger as well, while Bryce Harper, Pedro Severino and even starting pitcher Stephen Strasburg added base hits of their own in the victory. Strasburg got the win to improve to 2-1 this season after throwing eight innings of three hit shutout baseball, walking a pair and striking out eight. Ryan Madson retired the last two batters in the 9th for his first save of the season. A.J. Cole will start the finale and is 0-1 with a 24.55 ERA and 4 strikeouts this season. In his career, Cole is 0-1 with a 19.96 ERA and 5 strikeouts against Atlanta.
Atlanta is 3-8 in their last 11 road games and 2-7 in their last 9 road games against a right-handed starter while the over is 6-1-3 in their last 10 division matchups. Washington is 0-8 in Cole’s last 8 home starts and 2-5 in their last 7 games overall while the over is 5-2-2 in their last 9 games overall. Atlanta is 19-41 in the last 60 meetings between these two teams.
Washington has gotten the better of the Braves in the first two games, but those numbers for Cole are not a typo. Cole has already faced the Braves in his first start this season, and gave up 10 runs in 3.2 innings of work. Uhhh, no. Not a chance. McCarthy is looking like he’s going to be a key cog in Atlanta’s rotation this season, and while he doesn’t have a mark in the win column in his career against the Nationals, McCarthy is a better option than Cole, as Washington hasn’t had any luck with him on the bump at home, so I’ll take a stab at Atlanta with the plus money here.
