The Colorado Rockies and the Washington Nationals square off on Thursday in game one of a four game MLB set from Nationals Park.
The Colorado Rockies will look to build some momentum after snapping a 3 game losing streak with a 6-4 win in their series finale against the Padres, avoiding the sweep in the process. Tony Wolters led the Rockies, going 1 for 4 with two RBIs, while Ian Desmond, Carlos Gonzalez and Pat Valaika each added an RBI in the winning effort for Colorado. DJ LeMahieu went 3 for 5 with a double while Gerardo Parra, Ryan McMahon and even starting pitcher German Marquez added base hits of their own in the win. Marquez went just three innings, giving up a single hit while striking out four, not factoring in the decision. Antonio Senzatela got the win to improve to 1-1 this season, while Wade Davis struck out a pair in the 9th for his 5th save of the season. Chad Bettis will get the start in game one and is 1-0 with a 2.53 ERA and 7 strikeouts this season. In his career, Bettis is 1-0 with a 4.26 ERA and 9 strikeouts against Washington.

The Washington Nationals will look to bounce back after failing to complete the sweep of the Braves, losing the series finale in extra innings by a final score of 5-3 on Wednesday. Matt Adams belted a solo home run, while Trea Turner and Howie Kendrick each went 2 for 5 with an RBI, with Kendrick notching a double in the losing effort. Bryce Harper, Anthony Rendon, Michael A. Taylor, Pedro Severino and Wilmer Difo all contributed a base hit as well in the loss for the Nets. Cole went 5.1 innings, giving up two runs on three hits while walking a pair and whiffing five, not factoring in the decision. Ryan Madson gave up the game-deciding runs in the 11th, taking the loss to fall to 0-1 this season. Gio Gonzalez will start the opener and is 1-0 with a 1.59 ERA and 13 strikeouts this season. In his career, Gonzalez is 4-0 with a 3.58 ERA and 25 strikeouts against Colorado.
Colorado is 4-1 in their last 5 road games and 2-6 in their last 8 games against a team with a winning record while the over is 4-0 in their last 4 game 1 of a series. Washington is 6-0 in Gonzalez’s last 6 starts against the NL West and 2-6 in their last 8 games overall while the under is 20-4-3 in their last 27 games against the NL West. Washington is 4-1 in Gonzalez’s last 5 starts against Colorado.
Colorado got a much needed win on Wednesday, and sparked a bench-clearing brawl that clearly lit a fire underneath the Rockies. However, the Nationals will be kicking themselves after letting one get away against the Braves on Wednesday, and the Nets have the advantage of not having to travel. Bettis has been decent to start the year, but Gonzalez has been money against the NL West dating back to last season, including a perfect 4-0 record in his career against Colorado. I don’t love the price, but I think based on that you have to side with Washington here.
