The Atlanta Braves and the Chicago Cubs square off in MLB action in game one of their three game weekend set from Wrigley Field on Friday.
The Atlanta Braves will try to find some consistent play after splitting their last six games, but took a step in the right direction by avoiding the sweep against Washington, salvaging a 5-3 win in 12 innings against the Nationals on Wednesday. Kurt Suzuki and Peter Bourjos each had two RBIs, with Suzuki hitting a pair of solo homers while going 3 for 6 at the dish, while Bourjos went 2 for 3 with a double. Ozzie Albies went 3 for 6 with a solo homer of his own to round out the scoring for the Braves in the win, while Freddie Freeman and Dansby Swanson each had a double as well. Brandon McCarthy went five innings, giving up one run on four hits while walking a pair and striking out three, not factoring in the decision. Arodys Vizcaino received his first blown save of the year, while Shane Carle also notched his first blown save, but got the win in relief to improve to 2-1 this season. Anibal Sanchez will start the opener and is 0-0 with a 2.25 ERA and 8 strikeouts this season. In his career, Sanchez is 3-2 with a 3.82 ERA and 39 strikeouts against the Cubs.
The Chicago Cubs will also be looking to find consistency after splitting their first twelve games to start the year, sitting at 6-6 after losing their series finale to Pittsburgh by a final score of 6-1 in Thursday. Kyle Schwarber’s solo homer was the lone run for the Cubbies in the loss, going 3 for 4 at the dish with a double as well. Ian Happy went 2 for 4 with a double while Victor Caratini and Jason Heyward each contributed a base hit as well in the losing effort. Kyle Hendricks took the loss to fall to 0-1 after giving up two runs on five hits while walking three and striking out seven. Yu Darvish will start game one and is 0-0 with a 5.23 ERA and 13 strikeouts this season. This will be Darvish’s first career start against Atlanta.
Atlanta is 5-0 in their last 5 games against a team with a winning record and 4-9 in their last 13 road games while the under is 5-0 in their last 5 games overall. Chicago is 11-5 in their last 16 games against the NL East and 16-5 in their last 21 game 1 of a series while the under is 17-8-1 in their last 26 games against a team with a winning record. Atlanta is 1-6 in the last 7 meetings between these two teams and 3-8 in the last 11 meetings between the two in Chicago.
Neither starter has a notch in the win column yet this season, which is surprising because before the season started I would’ve had Darvish maybe getting a win while I didn’t even know Sanchez was still in the majors. However, Atlanta has been a lot better than expected to start the year, and we can’t necessarily say the same about the Cubs and while it’s only a matter of time before the offense wakes up, I think this is a prime spot to take a shot at the Braves and the plus money. Let’s not forget that while Darvish bounced back nicely against the Brewers, he gave up five runs in just over four innings to a less than impressive Marlins team, while Sanchez stifled a potent Rockies lineup. Let’s try our luck with the Braves on Friday.
