The St. Louis Cardinals and the Chicago Cubs square off in an NL Central showdown in game one of a three game MLB set from Wrigley Field on Tuesday.
The St. Louis Cardinals will look to stay hot after winning 4 straight and 5 of 6 following their sweep of the Cincinnati Reds, including a 3-2 win in the series finale on Sunday. Harrison Bader went 1 for 2 with a home run and two RBIs while Yadier Molina went 2 for 3 with an RBI of his own to round out the scoring for the Cards in the win. Jose Martinez added a double while Tommy Pham chipped in a base knock as the Cardinals put up just five hits as a team in the victory. Carlos Martinez got the win, improving to 2-1 this season after throwing seven shutout innings, giving up just two hits, walking four and striking out 11. Bud Norris closed out the 9th, logging his 3rd save of the season in the process. Adam Wainwright will start the opener and is 0-2 with a 5.06 ERA and 7 strikeouts this season. In his career, Wainwright is 14-9 with a 4.03 ERA and 192 strikeouts against the Cubs.

The Chicago Cubs come into this one rested after having their series finale against the Braves postponed on Sunday due to inclement weather. The Cubbies were forced to settle for a series split with Atlanta after a thrilling 14-10 comeback win on Saturday, that saw the Cubs rally from 10-2 down after five innings with 12 runs from the 6th-8th innings for the win. Javier Baez led the team with a double and four RBIs, while Willson Contreras, Ben Zobrist and Kyle Schwarber each added two RBIs, with Zobrist going 3 for 3 with a triple. Albert Almora Jr. added a solo homer, while Tommy La Stella added a pinch-hit RBI of his own. Kris Bryant went 2 for 3 with a double and Addison Russell chipped in a base hit of his own to round out the offense for the Cubs in the win. Jose Quintana got rocked in the start, giving up seven runs on seven hits while walking four over 2.1 innings of work, not factoring in the decision. Justin Wilson got the win to improve to 1-0 this season. Tyler Chatwood will start game one and is 0-2 with a 4.91 ERA and 11 strikeouts this season. In his career, Chatwood is 0-2 with a 7.36 ERA and 3 strikeouts against St. Louis.
St. Louis is 5-0 in their last 5 road games and 7-3 in Wainwright’s last 10 starts while the under is 4-1 in their last 5 games overall. Chicago is 15-7 in their last 22 division matchups and 0-5 in their last 5 home games against a right-handed starter while the under is 19-9-1 in their last 29 games against a team with a winning record. St. Louis is 11-4 in Wainwright’s last 15 starts against Chicago and 13-5 in his last 18 road starts against the Cubs.
The Cubs have had the upper hand in this series and are rested after not having to play Sunday. However, I’m not sure how anyone can turn down plus money with St. Louis right now. Sure, Wainwright isn’t the dominant ace of years past, but he is still a capable pitcher with an offense behind him that is rolling over the last week. The Cubs have struggled with consistency to start the year, and while their offense woke up against Atlanta on Saturday, I think Wainwright gets the better of the Cubs on the road, so I’ll take the Cardinals here.
