The marquee matchup on Tuesday’s MLB slate pits the two hottest teams in the AL against each other as the Boston Red Sox against the Los Angels Angels in game one of their three game set from Angels Stadium.
The Boston Red Sox come into this one rested after having Monday off thanks to their series finale against Baltimore being postponed. Prior to the postponement, the Red Sox were going for the sweep and looking to complete the sweep after extending their winning streak to four games with a 3-1 win over Baltimore on Sunday. Andrew Benintendi went 2 for 4 with a triple, a double and an RBI, while Tzu-Wei Lin went 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI. Mitch Moreland went 3 for 4 with a pair of double while Rafael Devers and Brock Holt added base hits of their own in the victory. Chris Sale went five innings, giving up the one run on two hits while walking a pair and striking out eight, not factoring in the decision. Heath Hembree got the win to improve to 2-0 this season, while Craig Kimberly notched his 5th save of the year. David Price will start the opener and is 1-1 with a 2.40 ERA and 11 strikeouts this season. In his career, Price is 5-7 with a 3.53 ERA and 90 strikeouts against the Angels.

The Los Angeles Angels also come into this one rested after having their series finale against Kansas City postponed, leaving their winning streak sitting at seven games following a 5-3 win over the Royals on Saturday. Mike Trout went 1 for 5 with a home run and two RBIs, while Justin Upton and Luis Valbuena each had a solo homer. Zack Cozart added an RBI, while Albert Pujols added a double and Kole Calhoun and Rene Rivera each added base hits of their own to round out the offense for the Halos in the win. Garrett Richards got the win to improve to 2-0, giving up one run on one hit while walking three and striking out five over five innings of work. Keynan Middleton closed out the 9th for his 4th save of the year. Shohei Ohtani will start the opener and is 2-0 with a 2.08 ERA and 18 strikeouts this season. This will be Ohtani’s first career start against Boston.
Boston is 5-0 in their last 5 road games and 1-4 in their last 5 games against the AL West while the under is 7-3 in their last 10 road games against a right-handed starter. Los Angeles is 14-3 in their last 17 games overall and 4-0 in their last 4 games against a left-handed starter while the under is 32-14-5 in their last 51 games against the AL East. Boston is 1-4 in the last 5 meetings between these two teams and 3-8 in the last 11 meetings in Los Angeles.
Normally, if I saw Boston getting plus money with the way they’ve started the year, I’d be all over it. However, I think the line just goes to speak about how well the Angels have been playing in their own right and how well Ohtani has been playing out of the gate. Price still makes me queasy whenever I see him on the mound, especially considering that he was dealing with tingling in his hand in the start against the Yankees where he lasted just one inning giving up four runs. I think based on that you have to ride the hot hand in the Angels until it stops cashing in.
