The Washington Nationals and the New York Mets meet in the finale of their three game NL East division set in MLB action on Wednesday from Citi Field.

The Washington Nationals will look to complete the sweep after winning the first to games of the set, including a 5-2 victory over the Mets in game two on Tuesday. Pedro Severino led the Nats with two RBIs, while Bryce Harper, Ryan Zimmerman and Wilmer Difo each added a run on the board in the victory. Trea Turner went 3 for 4 with a pair of double, while Moises Sierra went 2 for 4 and Howie Kendrick added a base hit of his own in the winning effort. Gio Gonzalez got the win after giving up both runs on eight hits while walking a pair and striking out five over 5.1 innings of work. Sean Doolittle struck out a pair in the 9th for his 3rd save of the season. Tanner Roark will start the finale and is 1-1 with a 3.50 ERA and 18 strikeouts this season. In his career, Roark is 7-2 with a 3.13 ERA and 71 strikeouts against the Mets.

The New York Mets will look to salvage a win and avoid the sweep after dropping game two on Tuesday. Asdrubal Cabrera and Yoenis Cespedes each had an RBI to round out the scoring for the Mets in the loss, while Amed Rosario went 2 for 4 with a double. Wilmer Flores, Juan Lagares and starting pitcher Zack Wheeler each had a pair of hits while Tomas Nido had a base knock as well in the losing effort. The aforementioned Wheeler took the loss, falling to 1-1 this season after giving up three runs on seven hits while walking three and whiffing a pair over six innings of work. Steven Matz will get the call in the finale and is 1-1 with a 3.77 ERA and 17 strikeouts this season. In his career, Matz is 1-2 with a 1.85 ERA and 28 strikeouts against Washington.

Washington is 1-4 in Roark’s last 5 starts and 7-2 in their last 9 road games while the under is 4-1 in their last 5 division matchups. New York is 3-9 in Matz’s last 12 starts and 9-4 in their last 13 home games while the under is 4-0 in Matz’s last 4 division starts. Washington is 49-16 in the last 65 meetings between these two teams in New York.

I’m starting to think that we are seeing signs that the Mets are actually human after all and are starting to cool off after that hot start. Matz is a solid arm, and has an ERA under two against Washington, but I still believe that he is the weakest link in that rotation and the Nets have a history of owning the Mets in their own backyard. Roark has been very good against the Mets in his career, and while New York roughed him up for five runs in his last start against New York, I think Roark makes amends and picks up the win and the sweep for Washington on Wednesday.
