For Thursday’s game, the Tigers will be bringing out RHP Michael Fulmer. In his 23.1 innings and 1-2 record this year, Fulmer has a 3.47 ERA with 13 Ks and six BBs.
Coming into this set, Detroit’s top hitter was Nick Castellanos with 25 hits, 13 runs and 11 RBI to his name. On Wednesday, Castellanos put up a homer and four RBI among four hits in game one.
Over on the Pirates’ side, they’re going with RHP Ivan Nova on Thursday. In his 30.0 innings and 2-1 record this year, Nova has a 4.20 ERA with 25 Ks and four walks.
Pittsburgh’s top hitters coming into this series were Starling Marte and Corey Dickerson, each with 23 hits and a combined 20 RBI. On Wednesday, Dickerson put up three hits and two runs in game one.
The Tigers are 4-10 in their last 14 in game three of a series and 3-8 in Fulmer’s last 11 starts. Detroit is also 1-5 in Fulmer’s last six road starts and 12-2 in his last 14 starts in game three of a series.
Meanwhile, the Pirates are 7-2 in their last nine during game three of a series and 2-5 in their last seven Thursday games. Pittsburgh is also 6-2 in Nova’s last eight home starts and 3-8 in his last 11 starts.
Fulmer has one bad game on his resume this year (six earned in 3.0 innings in Cleveland), but otherwise has been quite effective. As for Nova, he came out of the gate a little shaky in a loss, then put up three straight quality starts. This should be a fun pitching matchup to watch, and I’m leaning slightly toward Nova and the Pirates. The under probably makes sense as well.
