We have some NL East division action on Friday, as the Atlanta Braves take on the Philadelphia Phillies in MLB action.
The Atlanta Braves will look to build some steam after salvaging a series split with Cincinnati, including taking down the Reds by a final score of 7-4 in the series finale on Thursday. Ozzie Albies went 2 for 5 with a home run, a double and three RBIs. Ronald Acuna Jr. came next with two RBIs, going 3 for 4 with his first career major league home run and double while Nick Markakis and Dansby Swanson each had an RBI of their own to round out the scoring for the Braves in the win. Freddie Freeman added three doubles while Ender Inciarte, Ryan Flaherty and starting pitcher Sean Newcomb added base hits of their own to finish off the offense for Atlanta in the victory. Speaking of Newcomb, he gave up all four runs on five hits while walking three and striking out seven, not factoring in the decision. Sam Freeman got the win to even his record at 1-1 while Arodys Vizcaino got his 2nd save of the year. Julio Teheran will start the opener and is 1-1 with a 4.00 ERA and 27 strikeouts this season. In his career, Teheran is 9-6 with a 3.43 ERA and 108 strikeouts against Philadelphia.

The Philadelphia Phillies will look to rebound after losing their series with the Arizona Diamondbacks, including an 8-2 beatdown in the series finale on Thursday. Aaron Altherr went 1 for 4 with a double and two RBIs. Rhys Hoskins went 2 for 3 with a double and Carlos Santana added a two-bagger of his own while Odubel Herrera added a pair of hits of his own. Cesar Hernandez, Maikel Franco and Drew Hutchison each contributed base hits of their own in the defeat. Ben Lively took the loss, falling to 0-2 this season after allowing seven runs on seven hits while walking four over just 2.1 innings of work. Aaron Nola will start the opening game and is 2-1 with a 2.30 ERA and 24 strikeouts this season. In his career, Nola is 5-2 with a 2.04 ERA and 42 strikeouts against Atlanta.
Atlanta is 4-1 in Teheran’s last 5 division starts and 9-2 in their last 11 games against a team with a winning record while the over is 5-2 in their last 7 games overall. Philadelphia is 5-1 in Nola’s last 6 home starts and 21-7 in their last 28 home games while the under is 7-3-1 in their last 11 games against a right-handed starter. Atlanta is 6-1 in Teheran’s last 7 road start against Philadelphia.
This is a lot of juice to lay with a Philadelphia team that isn’t in great form lately, but I’m not sure Atlanta is worth playing either given their struggles against one of the worst teams in the league in Cincinnati. With that said, you have a pair of starting pitchers in Teheran who has only allowed three runs in his last 19 innings, and Nola who hasn’t given up more than two runs in any start this season. I think the safer play is to take the under, rather than trying to figure out who will win this pitchers’ duel.
